On the eve of Chof Daled Teves, a distinguished delegation of Chabad rabbanim and mashpi’im was received at the residence of the Satmar Rebbe, Rabbi Zalman Leib Teitelbaum in Williamsburg, New York.
The Satmar Rebbe is a direct descendant of the Alter Rebbe, and actually referenced a teaching of the Alter Rebbe cited by the Yismach Moshe in his divrei Torah this past Shabbos.
His head gabbai, R’ Moshe Friedman, is known to share that he studies regularly the sefarim of his illustrious forebear—Tanya, Likkutei Torah, and Torah Or.
Also present was the his son, Rabbi Yaakov Ber Teitelbaum, Av Beis Din of Sighet in Boro Park, son-in-law of Rabbi Tzvi Hirsch Meizlish, Av Beis Din of Shafran, Williamsburg—one of the leading talmidim of the Satmar Rebbe, Rav Yoel Teitelbaum, and the primary writer and editor of his divrei Torah.
Members of the delegation included:
Rabbi Leibel Altein—among the manichim of the Rebbe’s sichos; a member of the Vaad LeHafatzas Sichos and editor of Likkutei Sichos; member of Vaad Hanachos Hatmimim; founder of the Heichal Menachem institutions in Boro Park; Rav and Mara D’Asra of Kehillas Beis Menachem in Boro Park; editor-in-chief of Be’or HaChassidus and Heichal HaBa’al Shem Tov; head of the Chassidus Mevo’eres Institute; and publisher of the annotated Tanya and the Tanya Mahadura Kama prepared at the Rebbe’s instruction.
Rabbi Dovid Moshe Meizlish—editor of the new Shu”t Tzemach Tzedek; Av Beis Din of Shafran, Boro Park; Rosh Kollel for the study of Chassidus; Rav and mashpia at Heichal Menachem, Boro Park; and a member of the editorial board of Chassidus Mevo’eres.
Rabbi Chaim Shaul Brook—director of Lahak Hanochos and head of the Tanya HaSholeim Institute for the past twenty years.
Rabbi Yisrael Shimon Kalmenson—a maniach of the Rebbe’s Torah, and one of the senior editors at Lahak Hanochos.
Rabbi Yisroel Zilbershtrom—member of Lahak Hanochos and Tanya HaShalem.
The Satmar Rebbe merited to participate in several of the Rebbe’s farbrengens during the years 5724–5725 (1964–1965).
The Satmar Rebbe was amazed to hear that in the five weeks between Yud-Tes Kislev and 24 Teves, nearly 20,000 copies of Tanya HaShalem were sold in Williamsburg, Boro Park, Monroe, Monsey—in addition to over 60,000 copies sold worldwide since the sefer first appeared.

With respect, I would appreciate clarification regarding the statement in the article suggesting a familial descent between the Satmar Rebbe and the Alter Rebbe.
To the best of my knowledge, and based on available genealogical records, no documented paternal or maternal line of descent between the Teitelbaum dynasty and Rabbi Shneur Zalman of Liadi has been established. If there is a reliable historical or genealogical source supporting this claim, I would be grateful if it could be shared for the sake of accuracy.
This inquiry is offered respectfully and solely in the interest of historical clarity.
Both Satmar Rebbes R’ Aron and R’ Zalman Leib are direct descendents of The Alter Rebbe.
1) The Alter Rebbe
2) The Mittler Rebbe
3) Devorah Leah wife of R’ Yackov Israel of Tsharkas
4) Shterna Faiga wife or R’ Meshulom Zusia
5) R’ Mordechai Dov of Horinsteiple
6) Miriam Sara wife of R’ Sholom Laizer of Ratzfert
7) Brocho Sima Wife of R’ Chaim Tzvi of Siget
8) R’ Moshe Of Siget-Satmar (Berach Moshe)
9) R’ Aron and R’ Zalman Leib (current Satmar Rebbes)
The following is the blood descent from the Alter Rebbe that I found:
Rabbi Dovber Schneuri (The Mitteler Rebbe)
Rebbetzin Chaya Mushka Schneersohn (Married the Tzemach Tzedek)
Rebbetzin Reizel Schneersohn (Married Rabbi Solomon Gottlieb of Ludmir)
Rebbetzin Gittel Gottlieb (Married Rabbi Mordechai Twersky of Kuzmir)
Rebbetzin Chaya Reizel Twersky (Married Rabbi Moshe David Ashkenazi of Tolcsva)
Rebbetzin Ruchl Ashkenazi (Married Rabbi Yekusiel Yehuda Teitelbaum, the Yetev Lev)
Rabbi Chananya Yom Tov Lipa Teitelbaum (The Kedushas Yom Tov)
Rabbi Chaim Tzvi Teitelbaum (The Atzei Chaim)
Rabbi Moshe Teitelbaum (The Beirach Moshe)
Rabbi Zalman Leib Teitelbaum (The current Satmar Rebbe)
It’s all on Geni.com. I see no way to delete my comment, which had an old headline from another post I’d made weeks ago.
From the Horensteipler/Zancz dynasty direct decendant
The use of the term “direct descendant” in the article is somewhat misleading. In common usage, this phrase typically implies a direct paternal line (ben achar ben), which is not the case here. That said, the Satmar Rebbes—beginning with the Beirach Moshe—are indeed descendants of the Alter Rebbe, albeit through a maternal and marital lineage. The lineage is as follows: The Mitteler Rebbe’s son-in-law was R’ Yaakov Yisroel Twersky, known as the Cherkaser. His son-in-law was R’ Meshulam Zushe Auerbach, whose son was R’ Mordechai Dovber Twersky (who adopted his grandfather’s surname), known as the Horinsteipler. His son-in-law was R’… Read more »
Thank you for the clarification. It is helpful to distinguish between biological descent and relationships established through marriage. As you note, the original wording “direct descendant” could easily be understood as implying genealogical descent, which is why such clarification is important for historical accuracy.
Based on this distinction, it would be accurate to say that the Satmar Rebbes are related by marriage to families descending from the Alter Rebbe, rather than being his direct biological descendants.
