The central Hei Teves farbrengen, organized by Agudas Chassidei Chabad International, took place Thursday at Campus Chomesh in Crown Heights with many Rabbonim, Shluchim and Mashpiim in attendance.
Speakers included Rabbi Avrohom Shemtov – Chairman of Agudas Chasidei Chabad, Rabbi Yoel Kahn, the head choizer of the Rebbe and Mashpia of 770, and Rabbi Mendel Lipskar, Head Shliach to South Africa and board member of Aguch.
Veteran attorney Nathan Lewin, one of Chabad’s main lawyers in the federal court case over ownership of the Chabad library, was the guest speaker at the event.
The program featured videos and additional speakers, live music by musician Dani Springer, followed by a full night of Sheves Achim Gam Yachad with Chassidim and Mashpiyim leading the crowd in Farbrengens for various ages and languages.
Tevet 5 is celebrated as a day of rejoicing in the Chabad-Lubavitch community after the U.S. Federal Court ruled in 1987 that the priceless library of the 6th Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi Yosef Yitzchak Schneersohn, belonged to the movement and not individuals.
The ruling, in favor of the umbrella organization Agudas Chassidei Chabad, was based on the idea that a Rebbe is not a private individual but a communal figure synonymous with the body of Chassidim.
The Rebbe urged that the occasion be marked with time devoted to study from Torah books (“sefarim”) as well as the acquisition of new Torah books, Chabad.org notes.
