We’re all familiar with the daily schedules of Chitas, Rambam, and Hayom Yom. But those aren’t the only Chabad learning directives. Many of us take a masechta when the Shas is divided on Yud-Tes Kislev, and we “maavir the Chasidisher sedra” of Torah Or and Likutei Torah each week. But there’s a unique Chabad minhag that arises at this time of year – to learn Masechta Sotah during the sefirah period.
How does anyone do that? There are only so many hours in the day! So let’s start by giving a huge yasher koach to those who are able to keep up and complete the masechta each year! But for the rest of us, there’s a new sefer out that allows us to stay on track and infuse the days of sefirah with the spirit of Masechta Sotah.
The Transformative Daf by Rabbi Daniel Friedman takes a piece from each page of the Gemara and offers a lesson that is meaningful, relevant, and inspirational to everyday life. It’s an easy and quick read, and it’s designed for talmid chacham and novice alike. You’ll never look at Gemara the same way again and each day of sefirah you’ll be proud knowing you’ve enhanced your hiskashrus.
Let’s discuss the minhag to learn Masechta Sotah during sefirah. The basic reason is that the number of pages corresponds approximately to the days of the Omer. Nevertheless, the connection runs much deeper than mere coincidence of page counts. The Omer offering was one of barley, which is generally considered animal food. Thus, this time of year is particularly propitious for the purification of our nefesh habehamis.
The ritual of the sotah is one of refinement. Just as the sotah is purified from the depths of shame and hopefully exonerated and blessed with childbirth, the sefirah period represents our refinement from the depths of impurity in Egypt to our rebirth at Sinai (sicha, Erev Shavuos 5746, 5747).
Whether you’ve learned Sotah many times or you’re thinking about it for the first time, The Transformative Daf will help you translate the wisdom of Chazal into practical tips for spiritual growth and refinement. Let’s make this sefirah period transformative!
The Transformative Daf is available at www.transformativedaf.com and local bookstores. In addition, thanks to a generous donor, we have several complimentary copies available for shluchim to share with their mekuravim. Please email [email protected] for details.

I cant remember the last time I did Sotah during sefirah… Feeling a bit detached.
What a great path to get back into it.
Yasher koach!
Rabbi Danny is the real deal. I remember him from the days in Kfar Chabad, smart dedicated and full of passion.
Danny, Hatzlacha Rabbah!
Lookout forward to learning Mesechtes Sotah with your new Sefer.
Thank you Ephraim! Great to reconnect here! Wishing you a kosher un freilichen Pesach!
