The reason why Jewish holidays are described in Hebrew as “yomim tovim” (good days) is because they are good for the soul and the body, it is said. There is much feasting and there is time to daven and learn.
But there are many halachos for these days and there is a constant need to review them.
A new publication titled “Shoel K’inyan Umeishiv Kahalacha” aims to summarize the laws concerning yomtov that are mentioned in the Alter Rebbe’s Shulchan Aruch.
The 185 page soft-cover book is presented in a question and answer format and was authored by Rabbi Nachman Wilhelm, dean of the OnlineSmicha.com virtual rabbinical ordination institute.
“There is not enough words to describe the importance of learning practical halacha,” known Jerusalem dayan Rabbi Zalman Nechemia Goldberg wrote in support of Online Smicha’s learning method.
And so, Rabbi Wilhelm set out to provide an easy to read, concise, review of lighting a fire, preparation of food, carrying in public domain and cooking for a non Jew during yomtov.
An interesting addition is the section “Shaarei Bina” that discusses practical halacha from contemporary halachic sources, such as Rabbi Shlomo Zalman Auerbach, Rabbi Yosef Shalom Elyashiv, Rabbi Ovadia Yosef, Rabbi Shlomo Zalman Brown and Dayan Levi Raskin of London.
Among contemporary topics discussed: Is an ash tray muktza? Peeling potatoes with a peeler, folding napkins in a specific shape, changing water in a fish aquarium and measuring the amount of medicine for an ill person.
The book is being sold in all Crown Heights Judaica and book stores. Copies can also be obtained from [email protected]
