The Shalom Senior Center of Crown Heights, which has served seniors for more than 35 years, is among 110 senior centers slated for closure due to the latest fiscal cuts in Albany, COLlive has learned.
The only Kosher center within a 5-7 mile radius, its closure will gravely effect seniors depending on kosher hot nutritious meals delivered to their homes and the over 100 seniors who receive a broad spectrum of services and activities daily.
The center strives to help seniors with their health and wellness, decrease their loneliness and isolation, and provide assistance with social, economic, and educational opportunities to enhance the quality of their lives.
For many years, the city routinely received $25 million as part of the state’s share of what is called Title XX federal financing, and directed that money toward senior centers.
But now, Governor Cuomo has proposed directing the Title XX money to child welfare agencies, rather than senior centers.
“Please help us pressure the Governor and Mayor to keep our center open,” pleads a spokesperson for the center. “Please email or call them to let them know that the Shalom Center is the only Kosher senior center in this area.”

Children who need child welfare agencies could benefit from a loving grandparent. Send the kids to the senior citizens center and let the seniors mentor them.
Firstly, I would imagine that the C. H. Comm. Counsel is at least trying to do something about this. Secondly, as a Glatt Kosher Senior center site, usually , from my own past expirience dealing with a similar situation, the NYC Dept of Aging, would investigate to see if there is or isn’t another Glatt Kosher site for these senior recipients to which they could merge to combine 2 or even 3 locations within reasonable radius. This reminds me of Ancient Greece where they would place the elderly on a hilltop to die of the elements because they were useless. Without a social life one is like ‘dead.’ The ugly truth is that the government DOES NOT HAVE A ‘ZERO TOLERANCE’ for crime. Community should Rally At City Hall Or Perhaps in Albany To Keep the Center Open. It is an oasis For The Seniors of Crown Hights & Nearby Communities;
So that explains why the Shalom Center Shabbos Minyan (The Shul) is merging with Maple Street Shul.
