On Thursday night, 21 Adar II, March 28, the Belfer and Goldsmith families together with the Young Yeshivah and broader Melbourne community celebrated a Siyum and Hachnosa Sefer Torah.
The Torah was started in late 2017 together with the Ashkenazic Chief Rabbi of Israel, Rabbi Dovid Lau.
The Torah was dedicated in honor of Reb Yechiel Michel Goldschmidt HY”D of Lublin, Poland who was killed while saving Sifrei Torah from his Shul during the Holocaust. The Torah was also in memory of his family and his son, Reb Nosson Yitzchak obm.
The Torah was completed by his namesake great-grandson Yechiel Belfer together with his family and the Sofer, Rabbi Eli Gutnick and was accompanied by a twilight procession of hundreds, which led into Yeshivah Shule where Hakofos were held followed by a Suedas Mitzvah.
Mrs. Goldsmith recalled for the captive audience her late husband learning the tale of his father’s death years after it occurred, from a first cousin that was present in Poland at the time and later escaped to New York.
Special thanks to Menachem Benchemon of Visual-Torah.com for sponsoring the Siyum V’Hachnosas Sefer Torah Hakofos cards.
