Bais Chana High School, in Orange, CT, may be a small school, but it certainly makes a big impact. Over fourteen hundred dollars was raised by the student body to bring desperately needed aid to the Jews of Ukraine.
Bais Chana participated in the global “30 letters in 30 days” hachana for Yud Aleph Nissan, arranged by Vaad Or VeChom, but with an additional unique twist. “We believe learning should always have a practical application, and not just remain cerebral,” explained Mrs. Bluma Hecht, principal.
“We thought it would be very special to use the Yud Aleph Nissan learning to do what is so important to the Rebbe–helping other Jews,” said eleventh grader, Hendel Peret, who as a yoma dpagra committee member, helped spearhead the project. Students found sponsors who donated for each letter learned, and collected that money to impact fellow Yidden in need.
As part of the school-wide program, the students were privileged to hear from two incredible Shluchos, Mrs. Moscowitz of Kharkov, and Mrs. Wilhelm of Zhitomir. Each spoke via zoom, about the unbelievable work they do for their communities, and the details of their escape from the war-torn country. Hearing first hand about their mesiras nefesh and the urgent needs of their communities, spurred the students into action.
Ultimately, through the many sponsorships, hard work and learning by the Bais Chana students, over fourteen hundred dollars was raised to aid Jewish refugees from Ukraine, practically implementing the idea of “hamaseh hu Haikar” as a result of their learning.
