As the school year approaches, every parent hopes to set their children up for success — not just in academics, but in confidence, creativity, and life skills. Back by popular demand, this fall, Behind the Seams, led by beloved instructor Zeldy Schwei, is once again offering a fun way to do just that: a Sunday afternoon extracurricular sewing group for girls ages 8–12.
Conveniently located at President Street and Albany Avenue, these hands-on classes combine practical skills with creative expression, giving girls the tools to bring their ideas to life — literally. Students will learn both hand sewing and machine sewing, progressing from basic stitches to creating their own usable, wearable projects.
Why sewing is more than just a hobby
Learning to sew isn’t just about making clothes or mending a hem. It teaches patience, problem-solving, and attention to detail. It empowers girls to take pride in their work, fosters independence by giving them the ability to create and repair, and offers a calming, screen-free outlet for self-expression. From choosing fabrics to seeing a finished product they made themselves, every step builds confidence — and that confidence carries into school, friendships, and beyond.
“There’s something deeply rewarding about seeing a girl’s face light up when she holds something she’s made with her own two hands,” says Schwei. “It’s not just about sewing; it’s about showing them they can do incredible things.”
Spaces are limited, and with back-to-school season around the corner, now is the perfect time to enroll. Give your daughter a skill she’ll cherish for life — and a boost of confidence to match.
