Renowned author, speaker, and newspaper columnist Roy S. Neuberger and his wife Leah paid a visit to Camp Premesivta this week.
The Neubergers have traveled the world speaking about the Baal Teshuva experience, in many communities and Chabad Houses across the globe. This week they retold their story to the boys at Camp Premesivta in the Catskill Mountains.
Neuberger told of his childhood, growing up as part of a wealthy family in a home overlooking Central Park. He related that despite the money and privilege, he could not find happiness and meaning.
Neuberger tried every other religion, spent months in the wilderness, joined the civil rights movement, and even wrote a book about ‘Why Jews are wrong and Christians are right,’ all the while trying to find happiness and meaning.
Only later in life, when he discovered his own Jewish heritage, Neuberger explained, is when he found true meaning.
Neuberger’s powerful message to the boys was how fortunate they are to have the truth in front of them from the start. “You boys have no idea how lucky you are,” he said, “to have the ability to sit here in this camp and learn Torah.”
Mrs. Neuberger spoke as well about their newly-religious life in Far Rockaway, NY, where the couple has influenced and taught many others about the beauty of Judaism.
After the talk the couple signed copies of their books From Central Park to Sinai, 20/20 Vision and World Storm.
