For many families in our community, the dream of a yeshiva education for their children feels out of reach—behind a door nearly impossible to open. Sometimes the obstacle is illness. Sometimes it’s financial hardship, often separation or divorce, and sometimes it’s simply a system that says “no” far more often than most of us would ever imagine.
When asked about a girl seeking placement, one administrator remarked, “We’ve already taken enough refugees.” Those words capture a heartbreaking truth: too many children are being turned away—or are at risk of being turned away—from our yeshiva day schools. Not because their families lack the will, but because they lack the financial, educational, or emotional resources to keep them there.
Keren Yeshua (KerenYeshua.org) was created to change that. With sensitivity, discretion, and determination, Keren Yeshua steps in when families are desperate—working to keep children in yeshiva or helping them transition from public school into a Jewish day school.
A few short stories illustrate the range of ways in which Keren Yeshua accomplishes its vital mission:
A mother, desperate to get her daughter back into Yeshiva after a full year at home, turned to Keren Yeshua for help. For months, she had been passed from principal to administrators to board members to rabbanim—always told to ask someone else—all. At the same time, her 6th grader sat waiting, falling further behind and desperate to be with her friends. With KY’s support, a school agreed to accept her daughter on the condition that she receive tutoring to catch up. KY stepped in to help cover the cost of tutoring and has embraced this deserving family throughout, and now this young girl is starting the new school year with her friends—right where she belongs.
A devoted father, once a successful lawyer with two bustling offices, is now doing everything he can to hold his family together as his wife battles stage 4 cancer. When COVID devastated his business, pride kept him from asking for help—even as yeshiva bills mounted and his children faced the unthinkable risk of losing their place in school. Relatives stepped in where they could, but it wasn’t enough. With the community’s support, Keren Yeshua was privileged to be able to close the gap. One daughter, struggling with severe headaches, still cannot attend full-time, but this father now knows he is not alone in carrying his family through this painful and uncertain time.
A recently divorced father, still grieving the loss of a child and raising his two children alone, had fallen behind on tuition until the debt reached over $20K. Working long hours in a warehouse and too embarrassed to ask for help, he felt hopeless as the school struggled with what to do. They wanted to keep the children, but the situation had escalated. Keren Yeshua negotiated a settlement through which it pledged support—but only on the condition that the father himself take responsibility for a defined, manageable monthly payment. This partnership relieved the school, empowered the father with dignity, and most importantly, kept the children in yeshiva, where they belong.
Each story is different, but the mission is the same: no child should ever be deprived of a Jewish education because of life’s hardships.
Keren Yeshua is not just a safety net—it is a lifeline. By partnering with parents, negotiating with schools, and providing critical funds, Keren Yeshua ensures that every child has a place and can receive a Torah education and the warm embrace of their teachers and peers.
The needs are urgent, and the challenges are real. But with your support, more children will walk proudly into a yeshiva classroom this fall—children who might otherwise be left standing outside its doors.
