Crown Heights came alive Sunday, 11 Shvat, as hundreds gathered to complete two new sifrei Torah for the Anshei Lubavitch shul. Beginning at the home of Rabbi Yossi Garelik, where the final letters were inscribed, the celebration quickly transformed into a procession through the neighborhood’s streets.
Dancing with the Torahs under a chuppah, the crowd moved from Empire Boulevard to Lefferts before turning onto Albany. As children waved flags, the procession made its way toward the rapidly expanding shul, which is located on Albany Ave between Midwood and Rutland.
The new sifrei Torah were greeted on the street by the shul’s existing ones, and after dancing on the street the celebration moved inside for formal Hakafos. Pesukim were led by Rabbi Yosef Yeshaya Braun, member of the Beis Din of Crown Heights, and Rabbi Abraham Shemtov, the Rebbe’s shliach in Philadelphia and chairman of Agudas Chassidei Chabad, among others.
Hakafos were followed by a festive seudas mitzvah and farbrengen that continued into the late hours of the evening.
