For Rabbi Schneur Oirechman, Director of Chabad Lubavitch of the Panhandle & Tallahassee, speaking in Florida’s Senate and House of Representatives is an honor he cherishes, but not a novelty.
The Israeli-born Shliach is often invited to deliver an invocation and open sessions with a prayer.
This week, however, it was different.
“I would like to welcome you to the 2012 regular legislative session,” announced the Senate President Mike Haridopolos, before introducing the rabbi.
It was the first day of the chamber for the new year and traditionally, the Governor, Lt Governor, cabinet members, family members, friends and past senate leaders join the current members in a day of celebration (and even entertainment).
“We had the opportunity to visit Israel a few weeks ago,” Haridopolos noted before calling up Rabbi Oirechman to the speaker’s podium. The trade mission with Governor Rick Scott was accompanied by Oirechman and his wife.
“May the last day of the session be filled with light and hope as the first,” the rabbi said in prayer, after putting in a dollar bill in a charity box to propel “act of goodness and kindness.”
