Our Crown Heights community has been fortunate to have exceptional leadership in the 71st Precinct in Crown Heights, exemplified by Deputy Inspector Tommy Smith.
Since taking command a year ago, just after the October 7th terror attack on Israel, Smith has demonstrated unwavering dedication, kindness, and graciousness, ensuring our community’s safety and well-being.
Throughout the month of Tishrei, Smith and his team, led by Sergeant Mike Barratta, have provided exemplary security around community events, thoughtfully accommodating our community’s needs during the holiday season.
Their presence has been a comforting reassurance, allowing us to celebrate with peace of mind. Smith’s willingness to listen to and address concerns has fostered a sense of trust and cooperation between law enforcement and our community.
Since Smith assumed command, our community has witnessed significant improvements, including:
• Enhanced counter-terrorism units near 770 Eastern Parkway, with added K9 units and long guns
• Increased community engagement
• Relationship-building with local community organizations to prevent crime
• Compassionate response to community concerns and needs
One standout element this year was the Deputy Inspector’s presence at numerous community events, such as Purim, Lag BaOmer, or when the parkway is closed for a community gathering.
You will always find the deputy inspector conversing with his sergeants and lieutenants, interacting with community members and giving out stickers to the children.
One community member recalled, “Seeing the Commanding Officer of the 71st at Simchas Beis Hashoeiva and at 770 on Simchas Torah shows us that he cares and wants to ensure safety and security during these tense times.”
As we look to the future, we are confident that, under Deputy Inspector Smith’s continued leadership, our community will remain a haven of peace, security, and harmony.
Thank you, Tommy, for being an exceptional leader, a true friend, and an invaluable asset to our community.

Thank you Rabbin Chanina Sperlin and Mrs. Halberstam.
Your endless hours of work for the betterment of CH bear fruits.
These members of NY Finest are well deserving of this recognition…..
Hakoras hatov is important
Batya has been working with the CHJCC with our NYPD precinct for decades as a liaison and has made a number of NYPD appreciation dinners. You dont always see her in the pictures but she is there behind the scenes and is available if you have an issue with both the 71 and 77th Precinct.
This is very true! Batya absolutely shines in this area and has advocated on behalf of CH residents for decades! I saw first hand!
