A major law-enforcement response is ongoing Thursday afternoon at a synagogue in suburban Detroit after reports of a vehicle crashing into the building followed by gunfire, prompting a large emergency operation and security alerts across the local Jewish community.
Authorities responded to Temple Israel, located on Walnut Lake Road in West Bloomfield Township, after initial reports indicated that a vehicle had driven into the synagogue complex and shots were fired shortly afterward. Police quickly treated the situation as a potential vehicle-ramming and active shooter incident and moved to secure the area.
Witnesses reported seeing smoke rising from the building following the crash, while multiple police vehicles, ambulances, and emergency personnel converged on the scene. The synagogue complex was evacuated as officers worked to clear the building and determine whether the suspect or suspects remained in the area.
The Oakland County Sheriff’s Office and numerous police departments from surrounding communities joined the response, alongside the Michigan State Police. Federal authorities were also involved, with FBI agents deployed to assist local law enforcement as the investigation continued.
Officials urged residents and community members to avoid the area while the situation remained active. Nearby schools and institutions implemented precautionary lockdowns as authorities established a safety perimeter around the synagogue.
The Jewish Federation of Detroit confirmed that law enforcement was responding to a serious security incident at the synagogue and announced that Jewish institutions in the region had entered precautionary lockdown procedures until further notice.
Temple Israel, one of the largest synagogues in the United States, serves thousands of congregants and also houses educational programs and a preschool on its campus. Authorities said they were working to ensure the safety of everyone present while continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Chabad centers and other Jewish institutions in the region are also closely monitoring the developments. Several shluchim told community members that they remain in contact with local law enforcement and security networks and are taking precautionary measures while awaiting further updates.
Officials said additional details will be released as investigators gather more information about the incident.
