On this day of Chof Daled Elul in 5748, the Rebbe spoke to N’shei U’Bnos Chabad with a heartfelt message. The Rebbe called upon every Jewish woman and girl to bring more holiness, more kindness, more blessing into the home in a very real and practical way: by fixing a pushka to the wall.
Not a pushka standing on the counter, not one tucked away in a drawer—but one that becomes part of the home itself, attached firmly to the wall, in the place where the family gathers most often: the kitchen. Before each meal, a coin is dropped into the box, and that act of tzedakah becomes the foundation of everything that follows.
The Rebbe explained that the kitchen, where the food is prepared, shapes not only the health of the family but their very character. Kosher food refines the heart and nature of a Jew, bringing out compassion, kindness, and holiness. And for this sacred mission, Divine help is needed. Giving tzedakah before preparing the meal brings that help from Above, drawing blessings of children, health, sustenance, and true Jewish joy.
When the pushka is attached to the wall, it transforms the entire house. Guests who see it are inspired to do the same. Children grow up with it before their eyes, learning that tzedakah is as constant as the walls around them. With a pushka affixed to the wall, the house becomes a bayis shel tzedakah—a home of charity, of Torah, of prayer—radiating holiness in every corner.
As the sun set on Erev Rosh Hashanah, Chof Tes Elul 5748 (1988), after Mincha the Rebbe issued a heartfelt and urgent call:
“One should hurry to fix a charity box to the wall of the home before the year ends. Make it part of the house itself. Then right away put in coins for tzedakah, for this brings blessing into the home and hastens the ultimate Geulah.”
With this one act, the Rebbe said, a house becomes a Bayis Shel Tzedakah—a home where kindness flows outward to others each day, and Hashem’s blessings flow inward to the family within.
To help every family bring this holy practice into their home, Colel Chabad is offering free pushkas ready to be attached to the wall. Request one today at
