Dollar bills that were given out by the Rebbe for charity will be passed on to generous donors that contribute to the legal defense of Sholom Mordechai Rubashkin.
The former manager of the nation’s largest kosher meatpacking plant is facing sentencing on April 28 and 29, and the campaign continues to prove that the recommended life sentence is “vindictive and excessive.”
Five former U.S. Attorneys General have written letters to District Judge Linda Reade in defense of Rubashkin.
Former U.S. Rep. Bob Barr has penned an op-ed in the Des Moines Register deriding the proposed life sentence for a fraud that paled in scope to Bernie Madoff‘s $65 billion, a decades-long Ponzi scheme.
And the Anti-Defamation League, among others, wrote to the Justice Department with alarm about “troubling” signs that prosecutors deemed Rubashkin a flight risk merely by virtue of the fact that he is Jewish, and thus could escape to Israel.
The Pidyon Shevuyim Fund for Rubashkin, working out of the NCFJE offices, is giving out single dollar bills that were given by the Rebbe in the late 80’s.
“Pidyon Shivuyim is one of the greatest forms of Tzedakah possible. But now, thanks to a kind donor, you can get this mitzvah, plus walk away with a dollar of the Rebbe,” they wrote in a press release.
Each Sunday since 1986, the Rebbe would stand tirelessly in 770 as thousands of people filed past to see him, receive his blessing and a dollar bill to give it to the charity of their choice.
50 of these dollars will be sent to the first 50 people who make a donation of $770 or more to the “NCFJE Pidyon Shevuyim Fund,” COLlive.com was told.
