The 71st Precinct of the New York Police Department has been assigned a new commanding officer, sources told COLlive.com.
The new chief will be Inspector Joseph Hayward, who is coming from the 60th Precinct which serves the southernmost point of Brooklyn and includes Coney Island, Brighton Beach, West Brighton Beach, and Sea Gate.
Most notably, the 71st precinct is home to Lubavitch World Headquarters at 770 Eastern Parkway, an active hub for locals and visitors from around the world.
Hayward is replacing Inspector Tito Romero has been on the mend from surgery after sustaining an injury in the recent protests in New York City which followed the death of George Floyd at the hands of police officers in Minnesota.
Inspector Norman Grandstaff had been temporarily serving as interim Commanding Officer in his absence.
The official announcement about the appointment has yet to be made, although sources told COLlive.com the new chief will be beginning his term on Monday.
Inspector Hayward already met one Crown Heights community activist, Chanina Sperlin of the CHJCC, at a Walkout Ceremony marking the retirement of NYPD Brooklyn South Chief Charles Scholl which took place on Thursday.
“Inspector Hayward has a great record on fighting crime wherever he served, and we are looking forward to having him look out for our community in his new role in the 71st Precinct,” Sperlin told COLlive.com.
“We will miss Inspector Romero,” says Sperlin. “We are grateful to him for the last 12 months of service to the community.”

I have lost track how many replacements there have been for this position over the years. Why is this news? that job is a revolving door.
