A fire broke out in a home on Eastern Parkway between Brooklyn and New York Avenues in Crown Heights on Friday morning.
The fire was reported at 658 Eastern Parkway at 10:40 am, with people trapped inside.
The home is a dorm for bochurim who learn in 770 Yeshiva, who were seen escaping from the windows of the building, according to bystanders. The fire may have started with a space heater, one bystander said.
Seven people were injured, one seriously, in the fire, including one firefighter. Four of the bochurim are currently hospitalized.
With the home completely burned out, the bochurim have lost all of their belongings. The Red Cross will be sending clothing and assistance for the bochurim.
Please say Tehillim for
Shmuel ben Devorah Leah, Shmuel ben Merav, Hillel ben Sarah, Yehudah ben Sarah, Hallel ben Hila Feiga, and Baruch Yehuda ben Yehudis.
The Tomchei Bochurim of the Vaad Hatmimim will be helping with their immediate needs.

It is so important to install smoke detectors on the ceiling and at least 12” from the wall.
Carbon monoxide detectors should be placed on a wall approx 60” from the floor
Fire extinguishers should be installed in the hallway on a wall, one near the kitchen and one near the boiler room.
Smoke and carbon detectors should be installed in every room on all floors.
My question is why was there not enough heat so that they did not need to use electric heaters which are dangerous???

Please
It goes without saying that the immediate concern is for the immediate and full Refuah shelema for the poor bocherim. And when that happens, this community better needs to fix itself. We’ve barely recovered from the incident in Jerusalem with the girls seminary. What will it take.
Also, we should never need to know this, but in a case of a fire and one might need to go through the fire, what they should do is if at all possible wrap yourself in a blanket, drenched with water and then walk-through in the fire will not be able to catch.
Refuah shleima……Not for this case but every family must do a fire drill with children. More important than smoke detectors
This reminds me of the fire I went through because my sem put us in a construction site and I was stuck for 20 minutes in Jerusalem this needs to stop people need to stop neglecting us children and not take our lives for granted Chabad schools put us in danger and they think it’s okay ,well news flash we are not your way to become a money making machine
Stop neglecting us !
Sounds like a really good idea
My granddaughter was involved in that fire as well, and I understand your frustration at the institution, but their goal was not to make money off of a fire heaven forbid! The other thing is also you say “ us children”, but let’s face it a lot of youngsters, especially today do a lot of crazy things, regardless of safety rules and measures that might be taken by the school. You had a fire, which is extremely upsetting and traumatic, but be fair, no one is out to get you. I can guarantee you the school feels even worse than… Read more »
Space heaters are very often considered against fire code as they can be very dangerous. Should only be used for no more than a few hours. They are risky and a hazard, In most businesses they arent even allowed. This was a house though. Why did the landlord allow space heaters? and why wasnt there sufficient heat in the house? Those are serious questions and facts and should always be discussed when people decide to have space heaters and that way it will prevent tragedies like this one. Right now we can only pray and say tehilim but we need… Read more »
How are the bochurim doing ????!!
Sometimes fires happen even with precautions, and sometimes fires happen because people aren’t aware of fire hazards.
Electric heaters should be kept off when noone is around as they can overheat and cause a fire chase vishalom. Also best to not leave it on overnight.
I hope everyone is doing well and recovers fast physically and emotionally
– Are cheap, easily stored, convenient, super easy to use, and most important, does the job – when the fire just begins. Every room, apartment, should have one.
fire blanket
I was furious when I found out years ago that the smoke/ carbon monoxide detector in my son’s yeshiva dorm apt. wasn’t working. I was willing to replace it. It turned out, it only needed batteries. At the time you could replace the batteries. How difficult is it to check the battery. They should be checked every 3 months. If the yeshiva is not willing to take that small measure the dorm counsellor should be assigned the task. Turns out after the detector was working a small fire broke out. B”H the smoke detector went off and the fire was… Read more »
As far as the landlord allowing space heaters. Did he know about them?
There are some that are safe but they shouldn’t have to be used unless there was no heat because the boiler broke or another malfunction in the house had occurred and was going to be fixed in a timely manner for the safety of the bochurim and the adjoining homes.
And yes, fire extinguishers are essential and the bochurim should familiarize themselves with the proper use.
Refuah Shlaima for the bochurim and I hope the repair for people in the adjoining homes can be done quickly.
Unfortunately, it usually takes a major incident to bring change.
Did they have heat and blankets? Who is the landlord?
A gut voch
Any update on the injured bochurim?
This is what I use for fire safety

A ‘bystander’ said that the fire may have started by a space heater. Next thing we know there are discussions going on about the heat that was or wasn’t provided by the landlord.
Did the bystander live there and saw the fire start or did he just come up with a possible scenario?

i thought it was illegal to not be up to code in smoke detectors and all that stuff
general message to everyone who isnt up to code,
all you buildings who are not up to code you better get up to code immediately you better stop doing unsafe things like that immediately.
‘home is a dorm for bochurim who learn in 770 Yeshiva’
This was a private rental to single working guys who are here on student visas from 770, not a yeshiva dorm, which is very different and implies that this happened under the responsibility of hanhola or the vaad.
