Five people were shot — including a 6-year-old boy — in Crown Heights early Monday during an outdoor J’Ouvert celebration, police and witnesses said.
The gunfire rang out just before 3 a.m. at the corner of Nostrand Avenue and Crown Street in Crown Heights, where about 300 people had gathered for a pre-dawn West Indian Day celebration.
The boy was shot in the left leg while a 47-year-old woman and 40-year-old man were each shot in the left foot, and two other men, 45 and 34, were both blasted in the right leg, according to cops.
All five victims were taken to Kings County Hospital Center with non-life-threatening injuries, according to police, the NY Post reported.
The official J’Ouvert and the West Indian Day events have been canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic, but revelers decided to gather in the early hours anyway.
NYPD Chief of Community Affairs Jeffrey Maddrey had informed local residents that all streets will remain open to traffic on Monday. Boys Schools in the neighborhood are conducting regularly scheduled classes.
Chief Maddrey also stated that there will be 700 extra police officers stationed in the area of the 71st Precinct, for a total of close to 800 NYPD officers who will patrol the area, as well as surrounding areas.
Police say that residents should be cautious throughout the entire weekend.
“Even though there will be no official parade, and we don’t expect anything to happen, all residents should remain cautious,” Chanina Sperlin of the CHJCC said.

HaShem should guard Klal Yisroel, ruach hatuma aver min haretz.
As Jews we must care about ALL people. It’s not acceptable that anyone got shot. Also, this happens on a year when there is no parade!? I can only imagine how many more causalities we would have with the parade.
