PlanTogether is a new Chesed initiative to assist seniors in Brooklyn who are suffering from isolation during the Covid-19 pandemic by gifting them with a living plant.
It was founded by Baila Dalfin and Nechama Hecht, 2 young women from Crown Heights who realized that many seniors are alone at this time.
“Our mission is to gift plants to seniors who are stuck in nursing homes, assisted living facilities, and in their own homes,” they told COLlive.com. “Gifting a plant not only nurtures the one who receives it, but the environment as well. With every plant given out, we are able to bring a smile to a senior in quarantine and make their experience a little less lonely.”
As an employee at a local nursing home, Dalfin saw firsthand the negative impact of restricting family visitation.
“The responsibility of replacing family and providing emotional support for the residents lies heavily on my shoulders, as well as those of my colleagues,” she says. “We are continuing to gift plants to facilities throughout Brooklyn since visitation is still restricted.”
Since starting their project, they have gifted over 150 plants to seniors, including Crown Heights personality Charlie Buttons. “It was an absolute honor to bring a plant to a person who has single-handedly brought so much joy and happiness to the Crown Heights community!”

What a beautiful and thoughtful thing to do, especially in times like these!
Studies show that when sick patients and elderly feel hopeless and abandoned their chances of recovering from illness drop significantly. Whereas, when they feel cared for and loved, their breathing improves, oxygen levels rise and their recovery chances increase dramatically. To Baila and Nechama; you are heroes literally saving lives. Your actions go far beyond a kind gesture and “just doing a mitzvah”. The Torah tell us to preserve life at all costs. And you are doing that in a very real way. This is a time for kindness and love. I hope your project catches on and “goes viral”.… Read more »
