When Nancy Miller of Pasadena, California arrived in the Crown Heights neighborhood of Brooklyn last April, she knew this would be unlike any other trip she had taken. Ms. Miller, an immigration lawyer, had traveled all over the world, but on this weekend, she was hoping to gain something more meaningful.
“By the end of the weekend,” she said, “It felt like the whole community in Crown Heights had opened their homes and hearts to welcome us.”
Over two hundred mikuravim and their Shluchim from Jewish communities across the world will participate in the second annual Shabbat in the Heights Shabbaton in Crown Heights next Shabbos, Parshas Kedoshim, May 13 – 15. The Shabbaton, organized by The Rohr Jewish Learning Institute (JLI) enables Jews to experience Chassidic life in a personal way.
“Throughout Shabbat, guest lecturers and study groups provide opportunities to study the Rebbe’s teachings and illuminating perspective on life and its purpose,” says Rabbi Efraim Mintz, JLI’s Executive Director. A guided tour of the Rebbe’s shul, office and home allows a glimpse into life with the Rebbe and insight into how he inspired his thousands of emissaries, leaders in their own right, in Jewish communities in every corner of the globe.
Pasadena, CA will be well-represented this year with a group led by local Chabad Rabbi Chaim Hanoka participating. “Living in Pasadena and working in the community for more than 20 years makes Pasadena home, but a big piece of my heart is always in Crown Heights where I grew up” says, Rabbi Hanoka. “I can’t wait to share it with my friends.”
Like many of last year’s Shabbaton participants, Nancy Miller plans to join again this year. The all-inclusive weekend contains all the trademark JLI attention to detail and feels like a mini-retreat, complete with plentiful food and entertainment. The spiritual and physical charge provides a much-needed energy boost which Nancy hopes will carry over into her work, helping and representing immigrants in their time of need.
