A 2-hour seminar about street-proven self-defense techniques is being offered to the entire Crown Heights community, organized by the Crown Heights Shmira patrol.
Taking place on Sunday, January 6, from 10:30am to 12:30pm, the class will teach men and boys ages 13 and up how to defend themselves against an attacker who is stronger, more skilled, and even armed.
The instructors will be Michoel Shapiro, a certified instructor in Israeli self-defense systems Krav Maga and Haganah (F.I.G.H.T.) who goes by the title the “Fighting Rabbi.”
And Eilon Even-Esh, a professional MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) trainer and a veteran of both the IDF (Staff Sergeant) and Marine Corps (Captain) with extensive martial arts practice in both forces.
Fundamental principles of self-defense will be taught, such as basic combative and striking techniques, basic defenses against common street scenarios, gun and knife defenses.
This seminar is being offered free of charge and participants do not need any prior training to benefit, organizers said. Participants are encouraged to wear loose fitting clothing and tennis shoes or sneakers.
With crime continuing to be a concern in Brooklyn, organizers specified 3 reasons to take self-defense training:
1. Protecting your own safety is important. Protecting your loved ones is even more important. Knowing a few self-defense techniques could be all that is needed to neutralize an attacker long enough for your loved ones to get to safety. If you are not studying self defense for you own sake, do it for those you care about.
2. Knowing how to fight gives you the confidence not to fight. Many lifelong martial artists have never used their self-defense skills in real life. This is because they know they don’t have to. Confidence allows you to stand up to a bully. Often that’s all it takes to scare them away. Bullies look for weak people to victimize. Self defense makes you strong and aware. It also trains you to avoid potentially dangerous situations so you are less likely to be a target for crime.
3. Taking self-defense lessons is excellent exercise. While you are learning to save your life, you are also improving your health.

a robber pulls out a gun on two congressmen and says give me all your money. the congressmen reply “you cant do that we are u.s. congressmen”. the robber responds “in that case, give me all MY money”
We are arranging a seminar for women in Crown Heights, iyH. Please contact me directly if you are interested: [email protected]
#6: your wrong. i like ur idea, #21
This particular instructor is gearing his seminar toward men and that’s fine. But how is it that there never has been any publicized self defense course for women in a community that is surrounded by enemies? From the stance of various volunteer organizations here, one gets the impression that women are considered incompetent.. but are they so considered to the extent that they cannot be imagined to benefit from a course which teaches.. better competence?
The time has passed for all comments about the past! The only error that remains in number 10 is one of agreement between subject and verb. “If someone mugs you… always throw it past HIM,” would technically be correct. “Past him or her,” if we must be politically correct! 🙂
Sorry people; you’re quite incorrect. “Passed” can only be used as the past-tense verb of the word “pass”. At any other time, it’s “past”.
Anyone who cares about themselves and their family should go to this !!! EVERYONE. it is free! there is no good excuse to miss this!!
Michoel is a great krav maga instructor and a true mentch. I go to his classes in CH. Highly recommend them to anyone who’s interested (tues and thurs 8pm at the levi yitzchok library). I think the first class is free to try.
The poster was replaced, and the updated version here has the grammar mistake corrected 😉
Michoel is an excellent instructor, which is one of the reasons I am joining him for this seminar. He and I will be teaching very Basic, High Percentage, High Retention techniques. Even if you have no prior fighting experience, you will retain a good part of what you learn as the Israeli Army (IDF) and the United States Marine Corps (USMC) designed their combatives to be learned in a short period of time. That being said, even if someone has years of martial arts experience, that person will learn something new at this seminar. Bottom line, if you are a… Read more »
PASSED MEANS IF SOMEONE GIVES SOMETHING TO SOMEONE. PAST MEANS BEHIND.
#7 the idea is that you throw the items past/passed [ 🙂 ] them and that way they have to turn their back toward you a little bit and in that moment you RUN AWAY. Yell and draw attention to yourself in that case. Very few criminals will run after you once they have what they want and you are making it more likely that some one will see what is going on. #22 I knew there would some one who would flash some black belt ego on the comments board. Karate, Tae Kwon Do, Judo, Jiu-Jitsu, etc take many… Read more »
IN #10 IT SAYS PAST!!! SO THEY WROTE THE CORRECT SPELLING IN THE FIRST PLACE…..JUST GOES TO SHOW HOW QUICK PEOPLE ARE TO CRITICIZE WITHOUT PROPERLY CHECKING THE FACTS!
Is this article about self defense, or proper grammar?
With regards to what the “martial arts” expert said while its true you can’t master martial arts in 8 classes you can become competent in self defense it is not fine motor school reactions but rather knowledge and general techniques.
Tank you
An NRA class won’t help at the moment since NYC gun laws are so strict most wouldn’t be able to get the conceal carry permit.
We must petition our local politicians to pass legislation making it easier for law abiding citizens to protect themselves.
CH Resident!
Thank You Crown Heights Shmira for helping us out every way possible, can you make a NRA class here too. armed yidden would make CH a really safe place no thug will ever mess with even a young lady with a gun!
NO, #6 is correct, and the grammar in the sign is WRONG.
“Throw it past him” is correct. “Passed” is the past tense of “pass.”
yay for martial arts.
as for grammar, #10 is correct as written.
Did they ever fire the police officers for that brutal beating?
Did they press charges against them?
amazing and very clear otherwise…. i donnow what pepper sparay is though…
Thats interesting! I always wondered why I constantly see people walking around with pepper
The government is dysfunctional.
I have studied martial arts for quite some time, and I can tell you that it takes YEARS to master the art, and even to know it well enough to take on an attacker in any situation. If you think you will go to a few classes and cone out an expert, then I have a bridge to sell you. Here are my tips: If a dangerous looking perp asks you for your phone or wallet, GIVE IT TO HIM! It’s not worth risking a broken jaw, trust me, this will cause you never ending pain. Your 8 classes of… Read more »
Carry a can of easy-off oven cleaner in a bag.
If you spray someone in the face/eyes with that: they won’t bother you any more.
And if you’re stopped by the cops: it’s all legal!
This is great and informative, sometimes the most obvious hints and tips seem to pas us by when in a crisis situaution. I believe all children should learn some form of self defense its a great confidence booster as well a vital tool for all life.Like learning to swim you never know when you may need to save someones life.
The grammer in the sign is correct.
i am very puzzled why not that many people with smartphones know about or bother to install free anti theft programs like the find my iphone app, or go to preyproject.com for other devices
Imagine thugs knew that if you attempted to commit a crime in Crown Heights you would get your ‘Tuches’ kicked by professional fighters, could you imagine what that would do to the crime rate?
Ye ye…
especially number ten, i would’ve never have thought of that. hopefully biezras hashem, i will never have to use it.
I met Michoel and he is a really nice guy, don’t get fooled by that picture 😉
This looks like something we probably need since our government isn’t protecting us.
Give us back some tax money you Democrats and Republicans!
Thievery!
Thank you Shmira for all your fine volunteer work in the community!!
Instant pepper spray. She survived the nazis.
-David Benveniste
very informative
Thank You Crown Heights Shmira for helping us out every way possible.
I think you are wrong. It’s passed them. Not past. Past means in the past. That’s not what he is trying to say. He is trying to say passed where they are standing.
If you throw in past them could that not make them angry at you and make matter worse?
The word is ‘past’ not ‘passed’
Kol TUV
thank u! ill def keep it in mind
i think this is a great idea its about time we took matters more fully into our own hands as a community
can you organize a class for girls as well? we need to learn self defense as much as, if not more than guys do. thank you!
any classes for women?
Really appreciated!
