Family and friends stood outside Lubavitch Headquarters at 770 Eastern Parkway in Brooklyn, remembering the frequent visits and the impact of the legend who was being laid to rest.
The funeral of Rabbi Zalman Posner, who served for 53 years as the rabbi of Congregation Sherith Israel in Nashville, Tennessee, took place on Friday. He was buried at the Old Montefiore Cemetery in Queens, NY.
Beginning from the 1960s to the 1980s, Rabbi Posner would travel regularly to New York, where he was the featured speaker at the “Encounter with Chabad” weekends held in Brooklyn for men and women seeking spiritually and learning about Judaism.
With his signature wit and erudition, he not only entertained and educated his audience of curious college students and young adults, but taught an entire generation of Chabad rabbis the mastery of the pulpit by example, Chabad.org wrote.
Rabbi Manis Friedman, a world-renowned author, lecturer and philosopher, recalls that he used to sneak out of yeshivah to attend every one of Posner’s talks.
“Rabbi Posner’s ability to present Chassidic concepts in English was revolutionary,” says Friedman, who is himself regarded as one of the foremost teachers of Chassidic thought.
“No one thought it could make sense in English. You needed a specialized language to convey these thoughts. He showed that it could be done. It was like bringing Chassidism to this hemisphere for the first time,” he told the website.
Friedman says that the most important lessons he learned were to speak softly with confidence, to encourage questions and to never underestimate the intelligence of the audience—if anything speaking slightly above their comfort zones.
“I recall one time when he spoke about the inner meaning of the mitzvah of tefillin, discussing many metaphysical ideas in a wonderful, lucid manner. When he finished speaking, he asked if there were any questions. There were none; everyone was just sitting with open mouths. Finally one student asked, ‘Is this what you meditate about every morning?’ He responded, ‘Nah, I just put them on.’ That made an even bigger impression,” says Friedman.
As Friedman developed into a teacher and lecturer in his own right, he says he learned the tricks of the trade from Posner, adopting his comforting, friendly tone, informal style, and absolute faith in the truth of the Torah ideals he espoused.
Rabbi Posner is survived by his children: Mrs. Shifra Deren of Stamford, CT; Mendel Posner of Atlanta, GA; Mrs. Sussi Denebeim of Palm Springs, CA; Mrs. Mimi Liberov of Porto Alegre, Brazil; and Rabbi Shimon Posner of Rancho Mirage, CA; grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He is also survived by his siblings, Rabbi Yehuda Leib Posner of Crown Heights, Mrs. Rivka Sasonkin of Avital, Israel; Mrs. Bassie Garelik of Milan, Italy; and Rabbi Zushe Posner of Lod, Israel.
The family will be sitting shiva at 1378 Union Street in Crown Heights. (Rabbi Shimon Posner will be there until Monday night. Tuesday he will be in Nashville and Wednesday in Rancho Mirage).

As a confused teenager in the ’80s, his book Think Jewish helped me tremendously.

I had the luxury of growing up in Nashville at Sherith Israel. I never got to go to school at Akiva though. Rabbi Posner treated us kids that grew up at the schul, as adopted grandchildren. At times, I think we may have taken it forgranted that such a respected man was our Rabbi, a man that truly changed the dynamics of the religious community here. He was always available for a talk and no problem or question was too big for him. He has been missed, since he moved to California, but not forgotten. May he always be of… Read more »

B”H Thank you for Think Jewish – it was a quick way to revolutionize my life…

May he be a melitz yosher for every Yid, even the Yid who does not know that he or she is Jewish… and may the imminent revelation of משיח be a balm for any loneliness or sorrow of his family, friends, and colleagues… until that day that allows us to all meet again, in a renewed world. May his teachings be preserved and disseminated.
I had the zechus to accompany Rabbi Zalman Posner to a conference on ZPG (zero population growth) in the 70s in downtown Los Angeles.
Although he was not on the formal program he tried to have 5 minutes to speak but to no avail.
He went to the pay phone and called mazkirus asking what to do. He was told to try again.
He did. And he was allowed 5 minutes and in his inimitable way brilliantly conveyed the message that made an impactful kiddush Hashem.

I was “Zoche” to have Rabbi Posner as the “Manhig Ruchni” on an Inward Bound trip in 5754 or 5755. He was truly remarkable on that occasion as on all others that I was privileged to hear him. He had a tremendous effect on all of us. He was there for us when we needed him and he is sorely missed.

My children were students at Akiva….I went for one year and my brother for several years…Akiva school in 1960 was as special as it was the day my children attended….I will never forget Rabbi Posners way of getting such a good point across….I am certain that G-d is using him already…..
Please do not use the modern trait of just using last names when referring to these great people. He is not “Posner”, he is very much Rabbi Posner. The same is true with Rabbi Friedman.

Rabbi Zalman Posner gave a brilliant talk for us in Encino California (already in) in the 70’s. Another caliber. Was always available to help inspire Shluchim and their Shlichus. Hamakon yenachem eschem besoch shaar Aveilei Tzion veyerushalyim.

So sorry to hear the news.
My father felt like a son to your father, thus having his children as brothers to him.

Reb Zalman a”h was an inspiring mentor to us and, we believe, to most of the Rebbe ZY”A’s Shluchim of the 60s, 70s,
and 80s. I patterned my speeches and talks and their delivery and style after his talks and sermons. He impacted
Shlichus very uniquely!
