While as a frum Jew, I cannot condone chilul shabbos, one might say that there could be a heter of sakanas nefashos etc.

I would like to thank the author for fighting for our community, and our community (not just the so called “leaders” who do nothing), should be pestering the elected officials of whom we are constituents.

Excellent choice to bring in hundreds of migrants

I know that was sarcasm

We all feel the same way. Our only option is to expand though they will try to stop that.

There is always a catch

Any recent project that is directly funded by the city (like this 564 Utica Ave – 832 Rutland Road) make no mistake will be 100% either for homeless or for the unstable individuals released from psychiatric ward.
(And with the current situation in NYC, or to migrants from south america)

This building is a crime hub in the making. Hopefully our local elected officials can somehow arrange with the city to make this for law abiding, hard working low income LOCAL residents.
At normal rent prices.

Thank you for this op-ed!

Wow! Really a scandal how they are going about this. Thank you to Mr. Sorid for his prodigious efforts in trying to avert this disaster. Everyone who can should go on the zoom but looks like a lawsuit is the only way to prevent this. Catholic charities are also behind paying for the illegal immigrants descending on NYC. Misplaced compassion.

It is not compassion

Or they’d settle them in their own neighborhoods. This is intentional.

Whatever this is about.. if it for the good of, or protection of our neighborhood, our voices, needs, opinions and rights will be bulldozed as though we don’t exist.

What's the problem?
May 18, 2023 1:36 pm

You complain about the crime. You complain about the homeless.

And then you complain when the city finally says we are going To spend billions of dollars fixing it.

See, here’s the thing

“Fixing it” doesn’t mean bringing in more criminals and homeless.

777 Rutland
May 18, 2023 3:08 pm

Another proposed 12 floor Homeless building nearby by 777 Rutland Rd may very well be illegal because it will block the sunlight for “The old girls and boys high school field” (aka Rutland/Troy Park, Located at 736 Maple Street).

Two years ago, Community Board 9 with the full support of former mayor Bill DeBlasio and city council administration, blocked & rejected the zoning change for 2 different large buildings projects on Franklin Avenue in Crown Heights because the proposed towers will be to high and block the sunlight of Brooklyn Botanical Gardens.

Community has more legal rights on 777 Rutland Rd

777 Rutland Rd, a stone’s throw away from Utica Crescent will have 30 homeless units and 152 affordable units (not homeless) with zero three bedrooms for parking spots. The community has more rights to fight this as it has to go through ULURP/City Land review process in which the city council will have the final say. City council will follow local council person, Darlene Meally, who usually would follow community board. Developer needs to change Deed restriction and also upzone the property, all of which is part of ULURP. For more more detailed info, go to http://www.eastflatbush.info and scroll down… Read more »

Old time comedy...
May 21, 2023 10:37 pm

Does anyone remember the old-time Dzigan and Schumacher (Yiddish speaking) comedy team? Here (in paraphrased English translation) is their spot-on explanation of the difference between Dictatorship and Democracy: “Dictatorship is a form of government in which the populace has absolutely no say – the government does [entirely] as it pleases. Democracy, on the other hand, is a form of government in which the populace may voice their opinion and the government does what it wants to anyway.’ The farcical double-talk that Jay Sorid is so painstakingly making us aware of (and sincere thanks for all your hard work, Mr. Sorid)… Read more »
