Staffers at Jewish Educational Media, the multi-media arm of the Chabad Lubavitch movement, were shocked Wednesday when its popular YouTube channel containing thousands of hours of content and videos of the Lubavitcher Rebbe, was removed in its entirety by Youtube.
Youtube removed the channel, which is under the name JewishMedia, after multiple videos of the Rebbe were falsely reported as stolen copyrighted material.
Jewish Educational Media, led by Rabbi Elkanah Shmotkin and a team of over 40 content and production experts, has spent the past 2 decades, at the cost of millions of dollars, acquiring, restoring, and sharing video and photo content of the Lubavitcher Rebbe.
Their Youtube channel has been active since 2004 and has accumulated millions of views from around the globe. Many of their videos received tens of thousands of views, with the most viewed video of the Rebbe on YouTube on their channel, racking up over 723,000 views.
However this week, that video, which has been seen by – and impacted – hundreds of thousands of people, has been removed, due to a youtube “copyright strike.”
This, in addition to a series of other fraudulent copyright infringement claims made by one individual, has led to the channel being completely removed by YouTube, due to having more than three strikes.
The copyright strike was the work of a young man using the title of “Moshiach,” who has also bragged on his social media accounts about having fraudulently reported the institution.
Rabbi Shmotkin said the organization has little recourse at this time, other than to appeal to YouTube through a standard form to reinstate their popular channel of impeccable standing for many years.
“I’m surprised at how vulnerable YouTube’s system is, that a child with a mobile phone and some false claims can disable a channel with over seventeen years of history and sixteen million views,” Rabbi Shmotkin told COLlive.com. “Clearly, this individual needs our prayers, and I have compassion for him.”
“It’s Chanukah, and people are especially eager to be inspired by the Rebbe and his teachings. It’s a pity that YouTube has delegated to an algorithm the moral responsibility that every human being has to another,” he says.
Still, Shmotkin is hopeful that this will be resolved soon, and suggests that anyone with a connection to Youtube contact their acquaintance to point out the unfair closure.
“The Talmud teaches that the Chanukah candles may be lit nightly until the hour of ‘kalya rigla detarmuda’iy.’ The Chasidic Masters teach the inner meaning of this law: ‘The candles illuminate until the rebel on the thoroughfare is transformed to light.’ It’s a shame that such a bright source of light on so public a thoroughfare was dimmed on Chanukah, but I have no doubt that it’ll be back soon and will shine even brighter,” he said.
“The Rebbe hammered home, every single year without fail, that the message of Chanukah is to always increase in light. From both a moral and legal perspective, JEM is the custodian and owner of these videos, so though it might take a few days, it’s only a matter of time before they will be available once again, better than ever,” he said.
“Clearly, we still have some work to do, but sooner or later, the last corners of darkness will be illuminated.”
Rabbi Shmokin also said he and his staff will not be deterred in their holy mission by this incident.
“Clearly, we need to be doing even more. Our team will be sure to use this time to plan new ways to bring the Rebbe’s teachings and inspiration to even larger audiences.”
COLlive.com has reached out to Youtube’s parent company Alphabet for a comment, the request was not returned.

For now, to view videos of the Rebbe, visit them on:
JEM.tv (microdonation) or one of their many free social media platforms, including instagram.com/jewish_media/; facebook.com/jewishmedia; linkedin.com/company/jewishmedia; tiktok.com/@jewish_media
Or one of their many foreign language YouTube channels, including Hebrew: youtube.com/HaRabbiMiLubavitch
I have been making this suggestion for some time now and even expressed it to JEM. A person have to come up with a app like YouTube and put in all the Jewish content. How many videos were taken down by youtbe due to shluchim expressing their believe of the Rebbes words? How many videos were taken down about prayers help for covid etc… just like before the jewish press came out all yidden went to see the news through goyish newspapers. Finally someone had the idea to start the jewish press and then all the jewish newspapers followed. Same… Read more »
Sue for damages.
Terrible people. How can they do this on Chanukah!
Even if they had just taken it down on purpose, it’s their site, they are not obligated to host anything people want to put up. But if they received a DMCA takedown notice they had to take it down. They are required by the DMCA to react immediately to any takedown notice they receive, and only then to investigate and decide whether to put it back up. There are supposed to be serious penalties for issuing a fraudulent notice, but that is never enforced. That’s not Youtube’s fault, it’s the government’s, for not bothering to enforce the law. If you… Read more »
We cannot tolerate this! In Chanukah, how much more so! We need to spread the light of JEM!!
What can we do to help?!!?
make a new youtube account?
Sorry for the challenge and nisoion this must be for you, but my congratulations to Rabbi Shmotkin for what you write and the way you see and deal with all this
May this break recess prepare you for Torah chadasha!
Time to move to Rumble?
The complaint against the channel was just the excuse used to shut it down. The real reason is the marxists in power are fighting against anything G-dly. As all communists do. Good luck trying to beg your way back into their good graces because you will forever remain at their mercy. Quit thinking according to the rules of fairness and good behavior. The abuse against you was not earned and is not your fault. Be prepared for more.
We are successfully transitioning from covert sabotage to overt tyranny. Psychological warfare. YouTube deflects the blame to Mr moshiach so you will innocently pay attention to some ridiculous complaint which could very well have been written by someone in twitter and is easily proven false by minimal research that Twitter can easily do themselves, if they only wanted to. They obviously do not want to….
Reach your own conclusions accordingly. The rules of the game have changed. Continuing to play by the old rules will garantee you lose in the end. Plan accordingly.
so we can correspond with these haters, what was the old url please?
Anyone – young or old, Jew or non-Jew – can falsify info and present it to YouTube under a “pen name”.
Switch to Rumble or JewTube. People that seek the Rebbe’s truth will find JEM.
If they get a DMCA takedown notice they *have* to take the material down. No service in the USA is exempt. The only answer is to go after the person who sent the fake notice.
This is why alternatives such as rumble and parler are so important…but actually I’d rather see our own because even a frum site would block chabad
With all the sophistication, a child could bring down the whole Internet!
No more ads “innocently” asking if Yoshke celebrated Chanukah?
There’s no way to complain to YouTube about those, apparently.
(Those kinds of ads seem to show up often above Kosher videos. Be very careful on YouTube.)
Moshiach now.
Now it’s available again!

Bh JEM’s channel is back up
I am quite familiar YT
they simply have too many jhating Pakistanis and Bangladeshis and self-hating Js working there for you to have a chance at reinstatement
it used to be much worse, but these types have always permitted antisemitism at YT – shockingly compared to all other discrimination
I have been attacked on YT, only to be banned for answering back. The Jew Haters? still spewing their Jew Hatred.
What is the reason a channel is shutdown?
