The Good Samaritan law only applies if you have a CPR certificate that’s obviously not expired if you don’t and you do perform CPR then you can be sued or worse
I believe that bystanders are allowed to help and can’t usually be sued. Probably different if someone drags a crash victim incorrectly and paralyzes them for life.
What you wrote was once indeed true, however in 1984, New York State passed it’s own version of the good Samaritan laws, which provide a certain level of legal immunity to first responders acting in good faith, within their level of expertise and without expectation of compensation (I do recall however, that once one begins administering aid it is illegal to stop until either the situation has stabilized, it becomes unsafe for the first responder (even due to a lack of Personal Protective Equipment such as gloves), or the first responder is replaced with someone of equal or better training).… Read more »

I actually carried him out of the car. HE passed out and the car rolled to a stop. A few people called 911 and then once 911 dispatcher instructed me to carry him out of the car, 2 people assisted me to carry him and put him on the grass. A bochur who knew cpr volunteered to start trying to revive him. we flagged down a passing ambulance who took over, then a fire truck came and then finally the ambulance that was dispatched. There is something called “Good Samaretin Law” that protects those that intervene medically to an UNCONSCIOUS stranger under the assumption that he want the help but cannot agree to accept it.
You should do CPR RIGHT AWAY. Do not wait as someones life gets lost.

If you were really told that 40 years ago, a lot has changed since then. To leave someone without aid for the amount of time it takes for emergency services to arrive – even if they are called immediately by cell phone – could very easily be the difference between life and death. I have taken CPR courses twice in the past 10 years and the very clear instruction is that one is to delegate someone ELSE to call an ambulance, and immediately begin CPR, continuing until the ambulance arrives.

Certainly he was well-intentioned and made a Kiddush Hashem. Notwithstanding, I don’t want to be the fly in the ointment, but I am not sure if I agree with his actions. About 40 years ago(!), when I was taking a Lifesaving class in CGI, the lifeguard who was giving the course instructed us that we were to only provide emergency first-aid to friends and family.
