Recently, one of the top bochurim in a well-known Israeli yeshiva began the shidduchim parsha but was stopped in his tracks when he suddenly found out he wasn’t Jewish, Kikar H’Shabbat reported on Monday.
The bochur, whose parents made aliyah from Ukraine a number of years ago, had already begun shidduchim when his mother revealed to him that although his father is Jewish she is not. (It is unknown why she chose to wait so long to reveal this fact to her son.)
The bochur, whose entire world is Torah and the daled amos of halacha, was devastated. Brokenhearted, he confided in one of his Rabbanim from his yeshivah, who turned to HaGaon HaRav Yizchak Yosef.
HaRav Yosef used his influence with senior Dayanim to expedite the giyur process for the bochur so he can return to his shtender and resume shidduchim.

AUDIO: What the Rebbe said in a sicha on 20 Av 5731
It’s chilling reading the story and then hearing the Rebbe’s words
Context : The Rebbe was discussing the painful topic of mihu yehudi – the battle to ensure giyur in Eretz Yisroel would only be according to Halacha, the Rebbe told over a startling anecdote. “I asked a rosh yeshiva why he is quiet [about mihu yehudi]. He told me he is busy with spreading Torah. That is indeed a lofty matter, [but] do you know that there are goyim learning in your yeshiva?! And you say a shiur for them!” “Among the students in the yeshiva are one, or more, bochurim, who don’t even know [that they are not Jewish].… Read more »
Is there an English translation the the rebbe’s audio for those who can’t understand Hebrew or Yiddish ?

What’s the supersize that the Rebbe MH’M warned of this problem and they found one?
not supersizing at all.
Rebbe also spoke about people from former Soviet Russia that are lost generation and even don’t know that they are Jewish, because their ancestors hide and change all papers for the “ good “ ones. Who knows what is the Emes of these stories, but his Neshome is Jewish and found her way to learn Yiddishkait anyway. The big alya from ussr had a big potential to be observant but no one was working with Russian Jewish back in 90’s -20’s , only now some work is done. All Shluhim that came back to Israel need to spread Yiddishkait to… Read more »
Shluchim of Rebbe worked since the seventies with Russian Jewry. What are you talking about!?
And the person you responded to here also seems to be forgetting all the “underground” work the Frierdiker Rebbe did himself, along with sending rabbis to help preserve Torah and mitzvos in the FSU!!!
Moshiach NOW
What did the Rebbe practically want us to do about this ?
The Rebbe wanted real verification of who is a yid, for anyone coming to Eretz Yisroel as a yid, not phony claims by unkrainiens or falashim.
How do you prove someone is Jewish?
Family history
By finding out as far as you can on the mother’s side if they were Jewish
Khalacha
Not every case is a peice of cake, but there are ways such as researching family trees, kevarim, shules that they were part of and if there is no way to check back and they truly want to be considered jewish they have to do Giyur khalacha, not by a rabbi jessica..
second story like that in the past month.
who knows how many more that are never discovered.
Why? Up to about 20 or 25 years ago, many frum Yidden had in vitro WITHOUT SHOMRIM involved in the process. Many still do, r”l, and many others have done so during the past couple of decades. Not all are aware of the need for shomrim in the process, and many fertility doctors also still do not know about this. I have trouble believing that quite a few have not already been discovered that are in this status. This is a question that needs to be asked in all shidduchim, up front! This way, those who don’t realize they need… Read more »

I found this comforting for the Yeshiva student but very troubling for Am Yisrael because in the same week a Ugandan Abudaya convert who also lived his whole life with Jewish practice and in israel for 4 years has converted even twice but still is not accepted as a citizen of Israel by the Interior Ministry.
