Amidst the Tishrei crowds teeming on Kingston Avenue in Crown Heights on Monday afternoon, a woman caused a disturbance by setting a small fire in the street.
At around 5:15 pm, passersby at the corner of Eastern Parkway and Kingston Avenue were startled to see a cardboard box on fire, while a woman was shouting in Hebrew about the Israeli government having “kidnapped her sister.”
“The woman seemed to be mentally unstable,” a witness told COLlive.com. “She was shouting about sister being kidnapped by the government, and that they weren’t denying it.”
A crowd soon gathered to see what the commotion was all about.
Firefighters quickly arrived at the scene and put out the fire. The woman was detained by police and sent to a nearby hospital for evaluation.

Involuntary Commitment to a Hospital is a “massive curtailment of liberty” and can only be performed by police officers when there is an “immediate threat of serious bodily harm” to anyone, including the disturbed party. So here, while on the surface it may seem that the police handled the situation properly, it could very well be that they did not, that they “could have” arrested her for disorderly conduct, they chose to send her to a hospital, likely against her will, without the requisite standard of immediate threat of “serious bodily injury.” So while we can all agree to support… Read more »
