A bicyclist was fatally struck by a truck in the Crown Heights section of Brooklyn this afternoon.
At approximately 12:00, 24 year old Emma Blumstein, a student in Brooklyn, was hit by a flatbed truck while riding a bike at Bedford Avenue and Empire Blvd.
She succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Chesed Shel Emes and NYPD Highway Accident Investigation Squad are on the scene.

The” bike lane” in busy urban Brooklyn is insanity.

She has lots of fiends and a loving family who is heartbroken. Funeral today in Brookline, MA and family were totally devastated. Very very sad. I was a good friend of her Aunt who passed away 2 years ago and the grandmother 2 weeks after that. The family has suffered so much …. please keep them in your prayers.
I would love to commute by bike but as many have already commented: bikes and cars do not mix.
I look forward to the day when cars, trucks and busses have their streets and bikers have streets that are only for them, why not there are so many streets and sharing them is not working too well. And also, I would definitely start biking then.
Take out all the bike lanes from Crown Heights Streets!
The cyclist was proceeding through a green light with the right of way. If you want to remove something from the road, make it people who are unable to operate motorized machinery safely.
what are u talking about u dont want to drive? just get bike lanes out!! whats the big deal??? if there are no cars you will have to walk everywhere!! especilly the store!!!!!! come on people say normal things here!!!!!! BDE may she rest in peace!!!!!
am i right ???? reply ASAP
BDE!
why not move the bike lanes onto the sidewalks. safer for everyone involved. Even kingston ave could have a bike lane on the sidewalk. much safer especially for children. Bloomberg should retire amd leave the city to be run by someone who cares for more than the ticket money he rakes in for the most rediculous fines.
where are they sitting shiva some people want to make a shiva call post us
I knew Emma, she was a bright and wonderful young woman. I am close friends with her mother. This accident has taken away my friend’s youngest child and her heart , along with Emma’s father and older sister will be broken
forever. Please have the family in your thoughts and prayers during this extremely painful time. Thank you!
where is this poor woman’s family, can we make a shiva visit or send a message if they are out of CHts?
lets all take this a step further, and look out for one another even more than we already do! if the driver who hit emma a”h wouldve been looking out a little bit better, this wouldnt have happened!
ps. im NOT a cher
Cars do not belong on city streets.
I went to sleep thinking about Emma and woke thinking of Emma. May her family be comforted among the mourners of Jerusalem. I decided to take on more tehillim in her honor, every day is so precious. I ride my bike a lot, with a helmet, I do choose the bike lane on E. NY as opposed to Empire because there is less traffic there….But that being said, we must live each day trying our best to engulf ourselves in Torah, Tefilla and acts of kindness a little more each day and to constantly be present of Shalom between our… Read more »
may she rest in peace!
No one has something to comment about the girl who tragically lost her life? Does she have any friends? family? anyone to comment?
The boro park bus drives there every day several times. Most of the time the driver will be holding one of his 2 phones in his hand. If we care about safety, THAT should be stopped once and for all. He endangers pedestrians, cars, bikes and his own passengers.
To #14 ur so right
I walk everywhere and the cars in crown heights (and much of brooklyn) are notorious for swinging around corners quickly. It is a law that pedestrians have right of way! I cannot tell you how many times I’ve been nearly hit by reckless drivers. All over the world bikers and car-drivers co-exist on the streets. And actually – as a pedestrian – bikes on the sidewalk are NOT safe. If people in Brooklyn would drive a little more responsibly – and if the police would crack down on driving rules beyond the typical speeding and red lights – the streets… Read more »
I once heard a cyclist saying Tefilas haderech asking Hashem to keep him safe.
A “BAS KOL” from heaven echoed back asking the cyclist to give G-d a break and and help out a little by at least following some of the rules of the road sometimes.
You advice that motor vehicles need to be careful is certainly valid but what is motorists to do when a cyclists: 1) Rides downhill form Montgomery to Kingston at high speed? 2) When a cyclists drives the opposite way of traffic, failing to abide by the law which requires cyclists to drive with traffic and not against traffic? 3) What is a motorists to do when a street like Bedford ave has 2 bike lanes for 2 opposite directions of bike traffic and the cyclists chooses to use the wrong one? 4) What is a Motorist do do when a… Read more »
There should be no more tragedies and everyone should only here of simchas!
Amen
Yeah
I think Shomrim also work for the Chevra Kadisha?
this is a terrible tragedy. as i driver i ALWAYS respect the bike lanes, however there are too many cyclist especially those on fast food delivery that are SOOOO reckless, they cut through cars, its such a hazard. i think the cops need to get tough about the cyclist obeying the law!!! a few years ago i was crossing Montgomery and Kingston ,i looked down towards empire to see if it was clear,of course i did not look up towards crown because it is a one way street. as i was crossing a group of African Americans came riding the… Read more »

I don’t know if she wore a helmet or not but it it’s irrelevant because helmets give you a false sense of security.
There is no way any helmet can ever help anyone like this who was run over twice, by both the front and back wheels of a Flatbed Truck.
Bikes can only be safe on streets without cars. Cars and bikes don’t mix and bike lanes off no protection.
If the city wants bike traffic it must be, not only a bike lane but on streets used exclusively for bikes only.
perhaps she died near crown heights to help her body be treated the way a jewish corpse should be, maybe otherwise wouldn’t have, kosher buriel?
BDE
That is so ignorant! As if cyclists won’t ride on the streets if there are no bike lanes. The bike lanes are there to protect the cyclists. Drivers are supposed to pay attention when they are driving and not cut into the bicycle lane and look when they turn. Don’t forget that most bicycle/car accidents happen in intersections. PAY ATTENTION
Flatbed truck drivers, like like Tow Trucks, often speed to be first to the scene of an accident to get the job to tow, while they endanger everyone with their excessive speed and reckless driving. This Flatbed truck Driver should have been arrested at the scene, since there were no skid marks on the street indicating he didn’t even try to stop and he ran her over twice, first with his front wheals and the again with his back wheals! The cyclist was also at fault driving at excessive speed down the hill from Montgomery street on the wrong side… Read more »
but i find these pictures insensitive to victim…
bike lane on kingston ave would be a crazy hazard!!
Firstly, this is probably not the proper forum to have this discussion. This woman has passed away in a tragic way, and I hope her family can find comfort…
But for those who are arguing against bike lanes…taking them away can cause more tragedies such as this one. The bike lanes are there to protect us! More bike lines means more streets on which to ride safely. You are right that bikers and cars shouldn’t mix – if we have bike lines and cars stay out of them, they won’t mix and we can all be safe.
take away the bike lanes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
this is scaaary!
think POSITIVE…. do as much as you can and thank g-d every day
MOSHIACH NOW!!
Always there to help
for the future its too dangerous to be biking in the city
I stopped riding because I almost got killed, and good friend of mine got hit, and is lucky to be alive,
bicycles and cars are deadly mix.
GUESS WHERE BIKE LANES ARE COMING NEXT?? TO KINGSTON AVENUE.THIS IS DANGEROUS FOR OUR KIDS.BIKES CAN NOT BE ON SAME ROAD AS CARS!! CALL 311 AND SAY NO NO NO NO NO
It’s really too dangerous for there to be bikers in the streets of Brooklyn. There’s barely enough room for cars. Especially since many bikers don’t abide by traffic laws.
BECAUSE ONE OF THESE DAYS IT WILL BE
I am a young teenager and my friend recently passed away.
I started thinking the same way as you do since then.
If we would all live the way you describe, there would be so much peace and forgivness!
Maybe there was no fault in this case- but in general, drivers in CH need to SLOW DOWN and LOOK for crossing pedestrians or cyclists before making their turns. There are crazy drivers in this area and people have to be so careful when crossing.
Our fate is sealed on Yom Kippur. Mee yichyeh, vmee yamus is serious stuff.
Some of us might not be around, so pay attention to what you say. we each might leave the world in a different way,
Take advantage of your time down here, you never know when your last day might be.
Lets pray for Moshiach, so our days of tragedy will be over.
Stop this ‘bikes-on-the-road-only’ nonsense! Every time a biker is killed on the street it is direct blood on your hands!!! Cars/trucks and bikes DO NOT MIX!!! they CANNOT COEXIST on the same street. Enough of your foolish ‘green/exercise’ stupidity! It’s killing the citizens of this city. If anything, bikes should ordered to ride on the quieter side streets only, Empire blvd. is a main thoroughfare with lots of traffic, it is dangerous!!!
What buisness does shomrim have to be there buffing 911 calls. Since when do they work for the medical examiners office
MOSHIACH NOW
i feel terrible for the family…so young…may they find comfort
So sad! So sad! May her family only know of simchas!
as i saw her lying there tears welling up in my eyes all i could do is pray. life and death is so unpredictable
I’m so sad to read this – no words
its so dangerous with bike riders on the main streets. im always afraid of hitting someone. tragic news.
this is terrible!
