Israeli police arrested a man suspected for break-in and theft at the Yeshiva Tomchei Tmimim Chabad in Kiryat Gat, Israel, while it was closed due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
The man, a resident of the city who is 29-years-old, was indicted and remanded until the end of the proceedings on Monday.
The break-in happened about a week ago when a break-in was noticed and valuables such as a projector, cellphone and money from the tzedaka box were stolen.
The burglary was caught on surveillance cameras which the police used to track him down. The Yeshiva is led by Kiryat Gat’s Chief Rabbi Moshe Havlin and has been closed since Israel declared a national shutdown.
During the police investigation, evidence was collected to prove that the suspect is also responsible for another break-in at a local shul a few days earlier. A projector was also stolen from there.
The suspect’s arrest was extended and he was arraigned in the Ashkelon Magistrate’s Court on Monday by the Israel Police Claims Division for two break-ins.
“The Israeli police will act hard against those involved in property crimes,” said a spokesperson for the police.
