New York Daily News columnist Jared McCallister has complained of the “consistently faulty and misleading” media coverage of the Brooklyn’s annual Labor Day carnival.
Brooklyn-born writer of the “Caribbeat” column said the West Indian American Day Carnival Parade is often portrayed “as a magnet for crime.”
“Don’t attribute far-flung incidents, occurring in other neighborhoods, to the parade. That’s just plain wrong!” he called.
In reality, some run-ins actually happen close to home as often witnessed by congregants of Lubavitch Headquarters at 770 Eastern Parkway which is on the main route of the parade.
One parade-goer managed to sneak through the many police officers stationed in front of the Jewish Children’s Museum and entered 770’s main shul.
Bochurim present said the Caucasian man “started going wild” and police were immediately called in.
Compared to past years, at least no one was hurt this time.
NYC Council Speaker and mayoral aspirant Christine Quinn and New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg were among the Parade’s Grand Marshals. Also seen was Rabbi Colonel Jacob Goldstein.
Jewish residents of Crown Heights who remained in the neighborhood reported hours of failed cellphone reception.
UPDATE 9:18pm:
This year’s Labor Day Parade unfortunately ended with violence.
At approximately 5:15 PM in front of 650 Eastern Parkway several shots were fired from inside the overly large crowd around the float T-Vice Ompa Haitian, the NYPD said.
A female was struck in her left lower back and a male in his left hip. Both victims are expected to make full recoveries, police said.
A short time later at approximately 6:00 PM, at the corner of Bedford Ave and Eastern Parkway, a male became the victim of a homicide. The victim was stabbed one time in the neck while inside this large group around this float, officers said.
At this time there are no witnesses or motive to these crimes.
thank u! its number one….
@2…thank you for the hearty laugh!
@1…scroll lower where you can see the full pic in better light. He’s holding his hat. I must admit, though, each time I look at the pic I’m taken aback by the appearance of him preparing to slug him.
according to AOL news last night quoting a Brooklyn neighborhood newspaper(Prospect Heights?),there were 2 shootings with injuries and 2 fatal stabbings AT the parade.
as long as crown heights caribbean agency insists on not changing the venue of the parade, the violence will continue. Every year you hear the same talk, and during or after theparade, the same violence occurs. Does it have to take a serious or fatal crime to have the caribbean office come to their sense and admit that the time to change is before the next parade. some people take a long time to get the message It is as clear as day. Too bad not Bloomberg, or Quinn or eve Ray Kelly will admit it is high time to… Read more »

It’s where 770 is.
So even with all the violence and danger, it is still a holy place to live.
(and that’s beside the fact that i happen to love Crown Heights.)
How can that happen in NYC? I thought there were no guns allowed?
PAWND!!!
Ha ha ha….
I’m glad nothing happened to you but think of all the things that happened to other people. every year there’s lots of stories on this website so why don’t you take the time to look through some of those stories. CH is not a safe place and it will take some serious work to make it safer
I know that man and he is a yid
there’s nothing wrong with crown heights i’v lived here for years on eastern prkw & nothing happened
that guy stole my bag from 770 and i managed to recover it!!!
Its time to move the Parade elsewhere IT IS A PARADE OF VIOLENCE.
Until they can figure out a way to these thugs away let them cancel this event>Its a public safety Hazard.Enough is Enough.
im glad i dont live in crown heights
Why is it that during the day there are thousands of police officers but the second the parade is over and it gets dark and that’s when the the crowd starts getting wild and all the crimes happen there are no police on the streets? The only thing the police left are some cars
Cellphone outage: I realized that this was the same phenomena as when we had the earthquake. Everyone was trying to call on their cellphones and none worked — due to the overload of the cell towers and the system. Here at the parade, you had 1 million people on Eastern Parkway most with cellphones. After the earthquake, some people got though by texting. But today, text did not even work.
lol
My cellphone didn’t work all day? Why? I dont get the connection??
the only white people i the parade…
why was the service out for a few hours? Surely it couldnt just be becuase there were lots of people outside…………
B”H thats A LOT of policemen!! no wonder there were no big incidents this year 🙂
