By Rabbi Nissan Telushkin for COLlive and Hasidic Archives
At the bar mitzvah of Rabbi Shmuel Levitin’s grandson, the Lubavitcher Rebbe said the following:
The Rebbe Rashab, and his son, Rabbi Yosef Yitzchak, once attended a conference held by the Czarist government on their plans and reforms regarding religious Jewish life in the empire.
During the proceedings, Rabbi Sholom Dovber spoke harshly against the government, risking his life for speaking against the regime.
Rabbi Yitzchak later told his father that it is in his benefit that there is no codified law detailing how and when a person is allowed to endanger themselves.
“If it would be discussed in Jewish Law,” he continued, “there would at least be a limit to sacrificing one’s life, for you are immeasurably placing your life in danger.”
