I’m writing this as a Lubavitcher bochur, not as a spokesperson or a Mashpia. Just a regular bochur in yeshiva, watching what becomes normal around us, and wondering why certain things are considered normal.
Technology moves fast. Faster than most of us realize. Something new comes out, people try it, and before long, it feels like it has always been there. Nobody plans for big changes in standards. They happen gradually, through little decisions that seem harmless at first.
That’s why I think it’s worth talking honestly about Spotify.
For a long time, people treated it like a simple music app. Press play, listen to a song, move on. But anyone who has opened it recently knows that’s not what it is anymore. The platform is designed around discovery, endless recommendations, visuals, and constant engagement. Suggested artists, trending playlists, album covers, videos, and an algorithm pushing you toward whatever keeps you watching longer.
And now they’ve rolled out music videos.
That should make people pause. This isn’t just about listening anymore. The visual side of mainstream music culture is now front and center, and nobody needs an explanation about the kind of content that often comes with that. Pritzos is not some rare mistake you accidentally stumble across. It is built into the culture that the app reflects.
People like to say, “I’ll just ignore it.” But that mindset has never really worked. Nobody starts with the intention of lowering standards. It happens slowly, one small adjustment at a time, until the uncomfortable becomes normal and the normal feels impossible to question.
A bochur already works hard to stay focused. There are enough distractions pulling at your attention every day without adding an app that is literally engineered to keep you scrolling, clicking, and sampling nonstop. It is not just about what you listen to. It is about the environment you invite into your pocket.
This is not about being extreme or fearful. It is about honesty. If something consistently creates challenges that do not need to exist, maybe the smarter move is not to keep battling it but to step back and choose differently.
And the reality is, we do have choices.
Zing and 24Six are two different music platforms built specifically for Jewish listeners. The experience is straightforward, the content is curated, and you are not navigating through a flood of material that clashes with frum values. You open them to listen to music, and that is exactly what you get.
With these frum apps (Zing even has a free tier), you’re not borrowing entertainment from another culture and hoping it fits. It was built with your world in mind from the start.
The point here is simple. We do not have to accept every mainstream platform as inevitable. We are allowed to ask whether something actually belongs in our lives before it becomes automatic.
A frum pocket should not feel like a constant test of boundaries. Sometimes the smartest move is not adding more filters or making more excuses, but choosing platforms that support the life you are trying to build instead of quietly pulling you away from it.
Spotify may be popular, but popularity is not the same thing as belonging.
And in a world full of noise, maybe the strongest decision is choosing the kind of music experience that lets you listen without compromise.
should not have any social media at all
And we should never speak loshon hara ever or have wrong thoughts. Let’s speak on metzius and less on ideals because otherwise it will go right by people
Each person is different and can make his or her own choices, but you’re missing a period at the end of your sentence; I’m not sure if that was by choice :-D.
Unlike social media, here there are good alternatives.
no internet.
It’s like putting a bandaid on a broken leg
I often see rabbis/rebbetzins with social media accounts and the types of people they actively follow. Way more problematic seeing Rabbis following untznius accounts. How can we expect more from our kids than we do from our leaders?
well, rabbis and such use social media for good. lets say they do outreach and they post flyers for events on instagram so they could reach people.
The author saw a problem found a solution and shared to help others. Lets focus on one step at a time to make the world a better place.
Ads are getting smarter
Lol. This is not an ad.
As you can see, i included two competing apps.
Which one is paying?
Could someone explain…
My kids are totally captivated by Rabbi Perl’s storytelling magic! 😊 They’ve listened to his tales over and over, and still can’t get enough!
I use it and love it!
You can make your own playlist of almost any Frum singer
A good reminder to be intentional in our life choices, not just reactive and without thought.
Loved the line ‘a frum pocket shouldn’t feel like a constant test of boundaries.’
Thanks for the heads up.
I see it’s coming from a real way and thought
Yes, it’s real alright. A period at the end of a sentence is also a real concept.
So confused is ur point to find wrong in real?
This Bochur shoudlnt be on COL writing op/eds. I am all for the frum apps but no bochur really thinks they are going to make a difference in anyones habits by writing a COL article.
Zing/24/6 are doing a great job getting some engagement with this ad and I appreciate the hustle.
Lol. I see why you may think that.
I think it’s important to note that Zing and 24six are two competing apps.
Which one is paying?
We have to start “somewhere”.
It begins with awareness.
Thanks for your honest & integrity.
Right. Cuz the author of this comment isn’t some bored bochur.
How can you be so certain that what this bochur writes will not help anyone change their mind about what media outlet they will now go to for their musical pleasure? Additionally, this article didn’t come across as an ad to me. Highly untrusting people may, or may not, be safer than the rest of us, but they really do come across as high anxiety folks to me.
I stopped reading this article after a few lines.
This claim can be used for anything in the world, and it boils down to the same thing: it is our choices that make who we are. If you want to watch a Rebbe video on YouTube, you have the control to ignore all the recommendations that the channel provides. If you want to buy shoes in Times Square, you have the ability to look away from anything that may be impure.
I definitely see where you’re coming from. However, id like to point out a few things; 1. Anyone who gives themselves access to YouTube with the excuse that they’re using it for rebbe videos is a fool. I’m not saying anyone who doesn’t have a filter is a fool (very possibly they are, but thats a different story) but there are wayy better ways of watching videos of the rebbe than giving yourself a thousand recommendations if thongs a jewish eye shouldn’t see. 2. More importantly, whats particularly disturbing about Spotify is that it’s much more sneaky than any other… Read more »
I didn’t even finish reading your response that’s full of nonsense.
By your own admission, you also have many other ways to access songs and shiurim other than Spotify, the same way there are multiple methods of watching rebbe videos.
Like I said, it applies to anything and anywhere.
we say veal tvienu lidey nisayon
May Hashem only bless you to make these good choice
Do we remember what Rebbe said about television? How outspoken the Rebbe was against having TV in our homes? This comment seems ignorant of all those talks and stories.
You’re also proving my point. I said “This claim can be used for anything in the world”. If you want to narrow it down to something very specific and entirely impure, that’s fine, but again, Spotify is totally fine if someone uses it for the good, like anything else that can be used for good or bad.
You have to learn to read properly.
we say veal tviaynu liydei nisayon
My whole fam loves and has it
Does 24/6 or Zing have podcasts?
Most importantly, do they have the Clappy and Frank show and Meaningful People podcasts?
It has all the jewish podcasts and jewish music
EVERYONE THAT CARES ABOUT THEIR SPIRITUAL HEALTH SHOULD GET 24SIX
Do they have derhers pod casts? Or homesick for Lubavitch?
The real question is why they would put themselves on Spotify…
because thats where most of the world listens. spread light into the darkness. turn bad into holieness
24six has both
Zing has Among Chasidim (the Derher one)
they dont have homesick for lubavich. but they have i forgot eather deher for kids or chitas for kids.
If a platform doesn’t have Clappy and Frank it sheds doubt on its legitimacy as a company platform
24six has podcasts.
I checked for you, I see the Meaningful People podcast but don’t see Clappy & Frank. You can (and should) suggest to the podcast host that they submit it to 24six. It’s free.
24six has podcasts.
They have meaningful people and clappy&frank is right now working on putting it up
that your neighbor can hear which means outside your own house. when its so loud the neighbor can hear. stop.
we dont want to hear your music. especially if its nonjewish music. or any music that sounds goyishe even if it’s called jewish.
Years ago, I scoffed at the asiffa in Yankee stadium against internet and smartphones, thinking that the rabbonim were out of touch. I’m a responsible adult, after all…
Since then, smartphones have caused unimaginable harm to my children. If you love your kids, flip phones only.
Thanks for telling us about zing. I downloaded it right now. Will i’yh try it out
This is well written and very true but it would land better if the second half didn’t read like am ad for the jewish platform.
I fully understand. Lol.
I specifically put both competing jewish music streaming services there to make a point that it’s not an ad.
A thoughtful piece with solutions! Love it!
Happy to help
do not use any technology in your classrooms either
that includes tv’s, movies, digital media,
I had it and heard a Cristian ad. Took it off since
I also use Zing (I’ve always thought Spotify was a bit too goish and inappropriate, I don’t know what’s new about that now) and I’m very satisfied, along with my family. Behahgoche protis, listen (not on Spotify :D) to TODAY’s Sicha Yomis, which touches on this very point! About the rambam: הַנּוֹטֵעַ אִילָן אֵצֶל הַמִּזְבֵּחַ.. אַף עַל פִּי שֶׁעֲשָׂאוֹ לְנוֹי לַמִּקְדָּשׁ וְיֹפִי לוֹ… and the Rebbe explains that it may be something very nice and attractive and with all good intentions, but if it comes from the goishe world and precisely the goim are enthusiastic about it then it has… Read more »
This is so incredibly important that you brought this up. As a bochur that used to have Spotify, the issue lies way worse than just music videos. That’s just the tip of the iceberg. There are legitimate Youtube Videos with all the big names on YouTube all on Spotify labeled as a “Music Video”. Thats not all. what got me to delete it for good was this: personally myself – I tried searching up on spotify in english a Hebrew named song. Being that Hebrew in english comes out funny, in the results I was shocked to see the results… Read more »
Yes. Sadly this is true as well.
Many people will post their YouTube videos on Spotify as a “Podcast Video.”
Spotify is essentially a video streaming service under a different guise.
Some people like to find a fault in something good that comes from someone else. I wouldn’t be surprised, if the author would have omitted the recommendations of those 2 apps that those same people would’ve commented “another article with a problem, without a solution”. Not everyone knows of these 2 apps. This is my first time hearing of them.
Thank you.
I do hate op-eds without solutions. BH there is a solution. I’ve given two competing apps as recommendation. Which one is paying?
This was an exceptionally well written article. Didn’t sound like an ad to me. I hadn’t heard of the other two platforms. Use Spotify to listen to my song lists and every so often search for a podcast (Shoshana Judelman, Rabbi YY). I didn’t realize there was temptation in Spotify in terms of videos bec I’m not interested in that. I listen vs watch.
I appreciate the points your excellent article made.
PS. Ignore the Commenter. S/he is becoming annoying. Very condescending “tone”.
If you read my comment about “This claim can be used for anything in the world”, you’ll notice that I have what to offer like everyone else and have my own opinions, thoughts, and points to share. There’s no need for you to be rude.
Thank you for posting this!!
which the world is not, but is how most people boundary themselves.
some people are comfortable using klipas noga to better their life experience in a kosher way and make decisions all the time. most people are best off like this post writer – just don’t do it. don’t use it. don’t go there. do and go where you’re told and has been curated for you.
I’m addicted to Spotify. About to delete it and download 24/6 cuz of you. Your article is worth it just for me so thank you
So happy to hear!
I deleted Spotify last week from my phone.
What is the difference between 24/6 and zing?
Zing:
Been around for longer, not as popular, not as up to date on things, but it’s free and even the paid teer is considerably cheaper than 24six.
24six:
More polished, more modern
(I also hear 24six gets a lot of jewish music releases before Spotify and YT music but can’t confirm)
But 24six is more expensive and there’s no free teer (at least not on mobile devices)
I didn’t know abt these platforms and you’re giving me a new level of awareness. What I will do with it, I don’t know yet. But you’ve made me conscious
We all won’t have a “tv” but carry around a device way more dangerous than one. YouTube , social media and just basic internet can give people way worse material than TV which has regulations.
So just get a flip phone
Yaasher koach bochur ! I so hear your words from the heart came to my heart .
If Spotify it is bad as you clean and you say stay away from it then why are many podcasts still on Spotify For example The Dvar Malchus weekly! We have great choice Do we not? I personally don’t use it much but knowing it’s Spotify makes it easy since I’ve used it before. If you want to list all the other stations that the podcast can be found great if not Then we will use what we will use but answer the question can you or is it just children shouldn’t have free choice? Adults in a community are… Read more »
Go back and reread
1. Please write coherently, I’m having a little trouble understanding your rant 2. Of course you have free choice. I’m not coming into your house and throwing your smartphone in the trash. I’m giving you perspective of why something i feel is a problem and how theres a pretty solid solution. 3. We ask every day in Davening that hashem not test us. We definitely should not put ourselves in situations in which we test ourselves. 4. Just because Torah is on a platform, doesn’t make it a platform for a Jewish person. Take for example the Rebbe’s Farbrengens. They… Read more »
Anyone have a recommendation for a platform for podcasts which isn’t Spotify that has all the regular podcasts?
bittul Torah
Thank you for bringing awareness and for sharing alternative options. You are 100% correct, and this article DOES make a difference.
Not everything in life is so black and white.
