Chovevei Torah Mesivta and Beis Medrash in Crown Heights held a Yarchei Kallah event Sunday, culminating in a Siyum of the Talmud by a 19-year-old student.
The full-day event was attended by prominent Rabbis such as Rabbi Avraham Osdoba, Rabbi Yaacov Schwei and Rabbi Yosef Braun of the Crown Heights Beis Din, Rabbi Boruch Lesches – Rov of Monsey, Rabbi Yitzchok Raitport and dayan Rabbi Shlomo Segal.
Lectures were given by educators Rabbi Zushe Winner, Rabbi Hershel Lustig, Rabbi Yossi Paltiel, Rabbi Shmuel Kuperman, Rabbi Yosef Barber and Rabbi Menachem Minsky.
After classes in Chassidus and Halacha, a siyum on the entire Talmud was made by 19 year old Shaya Zirkind from Toronto, who learns in Yeshiva Tomchei Temimim – Chovevei Torah.
When asked what is the secret to accomplishing what most adults can’t do over a lifetime, Zirkind told Chabad.org, “go to bed early, wake up refreshed, and take each day at a time.”
Zirkind, whose father is a ritual scribe and mother is an educator and international speaker, said, “When I started, it certainly was a dream. At first, I just sat down to learn the first masechta (section), then I learned another, and another,” he continued. “It wasn’t until the last year that I realized that I might actually finish it.”
Chovevei Torah director Rabbi Mendel Blau said that his student has been an inspiration to his classmates and the entire yeshiva, and that his story is beginning to inspire Jews around the globe. He noted that Zirkind saw his studies as a supplement to his regular yeshiva work, not as a replacement.
“We’ve had students that were on their way to completing this feat,” he added, “but this is the first time that a student has completed the entire Talmud while still in yeshiva.”
Originally, Zirkind didn’t want to draw attention to what he did, Chabad.org reported. Blau had to convince him to support the idea of Sunday’s celebration.
“I didn’t want to make a big deal,” said Zirkind. “But Rabbi Blau said that the reason to do so is to inspire people. It’s an inspiration to finish something, and everybody can relate to that.”
Following the Siyum, attorney and donor R’ Shimon Aharon Rosenfeld spontaneously came forward to give the boy a valuable cash gift and sponsored the seudah in honor of Shaya’s uncle, Rabbi Yitzchok Zirkind OBM, who passed away this March.

COL, Thanks for posting. May this article be the springboard to only promote matters of Torah, Mitzvos, and Chasidishkeit – you have the power to shape the values of our community, please take this seriously.
Mazal Tov Shaya! Incredible! I hope your hard work and diligence only encourages you (and everyone) to bigger and better things. May you continue to be a source of nachas and inspiration to all! -Chinkah
Mazal Tov!
Ach Tov V’chesed Yirdifucho Kol Y’mei Chayecho!
Thank you Rabbi Blau for sharing this event with the whole neighborhood!
What is the date of the video?
This is an inspiration for all of us, of any age. If a student could finish two daf a day, it would take less than four years to finish all of shaas. Thats do-able for a high school student, no?
Keep inspiring us, you should continue to see success 🙂
Know that your dear Bubba Shaina is reaping joy and true nachas from this incredible achievment
May you continue to build on this and go from strength to strength
Your proud Uncle Levi and Family
this kid is my hero!!!!!
May COL report these and other uplifting positive events and our youth would look a lot nicer the achrayus is clear.

your friends from chovevei
We need more people like you who show love and appreciation for Torah, Nigleh and Chassidus, and are ready to put their wallet where their mouth is.
By the way i love hearing you Chazering Mamorim Ba’al Peh.
This is incredible. Only once in a lifetime does this feat get accomplished by special individuals. Your son is a prodigy and an illuyi in Toras Chaim, nigleh v’nizleh, amazing and I wish the Zirkinds so much simchas coming up in the very near future, together with Moshiach Tzidkeini.
Kol Hakovod to all the Rabonim for attending and showing the community how much this means to everyone.
truly amazing may many others including myself follow his example
What incredible nachas to your dear Bubby Russell a’h which she so richly deserves. Kol Hakovod to you and your Parents.
And to all the shpitz chabad who say: what? chabad? gemara? he should be learning chasidus, farbrenging, getting ready for shlichus etc. I say to you: The Rebbe would be mega-proud and happy. And a bochur that went through Shas (of course also learning chasidus, davening chitas rambam etc.) will have a much better success on shlichus.
Do it again
Mazal Tov Shaya! We are so proud of you!
Your Aunt and Silber cousins from Montreal.
This is truly wonderful, mazel tov!
may he go m’choyil el choyil together with alliof klal yisroel and may there be more like this bochur

I am so proud to be a lubavitcher!!!
I wish we had more news about outstanding achievments around the world!!!
I was there by the celebration, and besides for being inspired from the bochur’s own accomplishment, i was equally impressed and inspired by all those that came out to celebrate and showed appreciation for what he did.
You were able to feel that this was everyone’s pride and joy.
Thank you Rabbi Blau for arranging this most beautiful event.
Also thanks for posting the video, what a powerful message.
rabbi zirkind is our teacher!!!
Your mivtzoyim chavrusa from toronto
Wow!! Rabbi and Esther Zirkind you are the most amazing, geniune people I have ever met. You are role model parents, and a role model couple. May Hashem continue to bentch you and your beautiful family with Gezunt, Parnossa, Nachas, Shalom Bayis, and only open and revealed good. Mazel Tov Shaya, you make Toronto and the world proud!!!
Wow! Very impressed.
I am awed-Speechless!
What a simcha and what an accomplishment! how true are his wise words “go to bed early, wake up refreshed, and take each day at a time.” My father always tells me the same and i’m sure everyone got their share of hearing them the chiddush here is that he actually lives up to is and see what treasures he is rewarded with! this is such a zechus and yeah i’m jealous – positive jealousy ofcourse the type that inspires me to live life to what it really could be by following the golden rules that Hashem Yisborech set out… Read more »
