Who Was the Key Chabad Donor Julius Stulman

You won’t find Julius Stulman’s name on any Chabad building or in the official chronicles of its history. Yet, the trickle of letters from the Rebbe to him reveals a deep relationship with both the Rebbe Rayatz and the Rebbe

At the Rebbe’s urging, who under the guidance of the Rebbe Rayatz, led Beis Rivkah activities, Stulman became a donor to the school. His support eventually culminated in helping fund the construction of Campus Chomesh on Lefferts Avenue in Crown Heights.

After months of research by Dovid Zaklikowski, Embracemagazine published a comprehensive look at this fascinating philanthropist, one of the founding supporters of Chabad in the United States.

In preparation for the article, Zaklikowski received generous assistance from Rabbis Shimon Gansburg, Shimon Sabol, and Shimon Simpson, as well as from the Backman family, the matriarch, her daughters, and sons Chaim and Eli.

The article draws on material from the archives of the National Committee for the Furtherance of Jewish Education (NCFJE), Rebbe Responsa—whose app greatly facilitated navigating the Rebbe’s correspondence with Mr. Stulman and Mr. Cowen—the archive of Rabbi Hirsch Chitrik (with thanks to Rabbi Ari Chitrik), and the Library of Agudas Chassidei Chabad (with the assistance of Rabbis Yitzchok Wilhelm and Zalman Levine).
