When the Penny Disappears, What Happens to Pushkas?
Question of the week: Are you happy with the U.S. penny being phased out, and how do you think this will affect tzedakah, especially the habit of giving small coins to pushkas? Comments

There’s always nickels & dimes.
Not the first time a country discontinued a low insignificant coin due to its value less then the cost of production.
Not a big deal.
Its known that stores & companies will change their strategy from advertising cost as $9.99 which psychologically looks & reads better then 10$. Perhaps change it to $9.95 now.
Otherwise the penny is just symbolic not really worth much.
of advertising 9.99 for card users and $10 cash price
Its actually better for them. They can advertise 9.99 and it’ll be rounded to $10
A penny is not a shava prutah. Shava prutah today is 3-4 cents depending on the price of silver. This will help people give tzdokah properly.
My husband told me this when we first got married when I asked why he always puts nickels in the pushka. It shattered my preschool Morah world after singing “even a penny a day before we start to pray” for so many years lol
Recycle the coins and give org a check or zelle
Daily tzedaka, add a note on your phone and after a while of adding your daily tzedaka amount, send paypal to any org.
I think the penny being phased out will encourage people to give more tzedakah since now they have to give more than a penny if that’s all they were giving. So that’s a good thing.
I’ve hoarded pennies and still use them at home, among all other coins and bills. I empty my own pushkas, donate, and will continue to reuse the pennies. Tzedaka donations probably won’t be affected overall by the change. Yidden are Rachmanim, Bayshanim and Gomlei Chasadim and will continue to joyousy fulfill the Mitzvah until Moshiach appears.
I went with all my kids to the bank to get as many pennies as possible, so we can recycle them and use them for as long as possible!!!
ב”ה this is a chance for us to give more tzedaka.
I dont mind nickels
All the shnorrers now carry a gadget that swipes your credit card. They don’t need (or want) your penny.
I started using the Kolel Chabad App as my Pushka bc they put so much advertisement and I ended up just clicking the link and downloading it
Pennies? Heck, I think coins in general will become obsolete, given the preponderance of electronic or credit card payments.
I used to carry a load of change and bills in my wallet. Now, maybe $25 (a month).
People wil gove more however it will be awhile since pennies will continue to circulate
Not sure why there is an article relating to pennies. There are better things to discuss
while the US has decided to stop production of the one cent coin, this does not mean they will be completely demonetized and declared valueless. They will remain in circulation as legal tender for many decades to come until eventually they all end up pulled out of circulation. So even after the penny is ‘gone’, you can still use it.
I don’t know for sure. But maybe for your grand children.

As someone who has collected coins for 15+ years, I can tell you now that Pennys will never be valuable. There are certain variants and mint errors that are valuable, but anything that’s not one of those isn’t worth anything. Don’t keep pennies laying around unless you are absolutely certain they are valuable or they mean something to you.
I think it’s good to have coins but in this type of inflation we need $200 & $500 bills or only electronic money …
When we give tzdokah we give in $ anyways but kids maybe will use coupons or something else and Pushkas are all via credit cards or apps…
Maybe school will integrate apps with thier own pushkas in classes attached to some type of parents prepaid accounts …
Canada did this a while ago and BH we are surviving
Give 15 cents instead of 18 cents
Can do any amount
3 times chai is now 50 cents instead of 54 cents
So 55 cents
We can still write a check for one or two cents and place in the pushka
Write a check for one or cents instead of pennies
A dollar is a sheva prutah
Instead of a penny a day
To most people, this was an unsurprising bureaucratic move-after all, it costs the government more to produce a penny than the coin is worth. But for those attuned to the rhythms of Jewish tradition, it recalled a striking passage from the Gemara: “Ein ben David ba ad shetachlah prutah min hakis. ” “The son of David (Moshiach) will not come until the smallest currency has disappeared from circulation.”
