When Buying Fish at a Non Kosher Store

Rabbi Elchonon Tauber was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York, where he attended the Vienne Yeshiva in Williamsburg and the Shaar Yosha Yeshiva in Boro Park. From 1973 to 1979 he pursued advanced studies at the Bais Medrash Gevoha Kollel in Lakewood, New Jersey, after which he relocated to Los Angeles, California, being chosen to be part of a select group where he spent the next eight years in intensified Torah study at the renowned Chassidiishe Kollel.

Rabbi Tauber is well versed in a broad range of areas of Jewish scholarship – from the practical to the esoteric – and has attained higher rabbinical ordination in “Dayanus,” or Jewish judgeship. In 1984, he was appointed “Dayan” (judge) at Congregation Bais Yehuda, from where he has been rendering Halachic opinions and decisions for the greater Los Angeles Jewish community ever since.

A resident of Hancock Park, Rabbi Tauber is often asked to sit on the rabbinic panels of many of the city’s most complex Din Torahs (Jewish court-cases) – most commonly involving questions relating to the societal changes of modern times. While Rabbi Tauber seeks, as much as possible, to confine his sphere of authority to the local community, his input and rulings are nonetheless constantly being sought by laymen and community leaders from throughout the world.

Rabbi Tauber’s greatest passions, however, remain learning and teaching Torah. In addition to the classes he lovingly gives at JETS (Jewish Educational Training Services), he delivers daily “shiurim” (intricate Torah study courses) and lectures throughout Los Angeles in Jewish mysticism, Talmud and Jewish law.
