COLlive has received reports from multiple sources of a recent scam that has already swindled many people out thousands of dollars. The public is advised to be vigilant and aware of this disturbing trend.
The scam goes something like this:
Let’s use Moshe as an example. A hacker manages to hack into Moishe’s whatsapp and locks him out of accessing it himself. Then, they send an innocent message to all of Moishe’s contacts asking them to do him a small favor and send some money to a certain account. Moishe’s unsuspecting friends think that they are helping him when, in reality, the money is being sent to an account where they will never be able to retrieve it from.
Some people have also reported receiving a message purportedly sent by the Whatsapp company asking them to verify their account by clicking on a certain link. They are then asked for their personal information to “confirm” their account. In reality, this information is being fed straight into the arms of a hacker who uses that information to perform other nefarious activities that can be extremely damaging.
This scam has already affected members of our community. It is extremely important that we remain aware and take the necessary steps to avoid becoming a victim of any such scams.
Here are a few things you can do to protect yourself:
– Activate two-step verification on your whatsapp account. This can be done on your device using the following steps: Open WhatsApp Settings>Tap Account >Two-step verification > Enable. Enter a six-digit PIN of your choice and confirm it. This prevents hackers from being able to access your account.
– If you receive a message from someone asking you to send them money, call them first to confirm that they are really asking you for this.
– If you receive a message asking you to share your personal information to “confirm” your account and you can’t think of a reason why they would be asking you for it, do not click on the link or provide any information. Companies do not send you messages like these out of the blue and it is most likely a scammer trying to steal your information.
Below is a screenshot that was shared with COLlive by people who were targeted in this scam.

One way to avoid this is to make sure to talk on the phone to anybody before sending them any money.
A quick giveaway was the usage of a Tzeilem Emoji (as in crossed fingers) in the request…
There are plenty of people who call themselves lubavitch who would use it without realising the meaning behind it…
Wow!! I used it sometimes, and I didn’t even know the meaning of it. I think we should somehow make people aware of the fact that that emoji means it’s a tzalem
it is whatever you want it to mean. “cross'” pre-dated christianity and simply meant increasing vitality
Yeah. Don’t give two strangers personal account information over (whatsapps) or email.
It’s super dangerous out there…..
Here are a few things you can do to protect yourself:
Delete WhatsApp from your phone. Who needs it anyway?
There are many people who use it as their only way to connect and keep in contact with family and friends across the globe… not everyone lives in crown heights and has their entire family living in the USA
WhatsApp only became popular about 7 years ago. How did you connect and keep in contact with family and friends across the globe before whatsapp?
If you don’t understand technology, you’ll get scammed even if you communicate with pigeons and smoke signals
Since when
I think it is the sign of the tzeilem to cross fingers
SORRY, ONE WOULD BE PRETTY DUMB & STUPID TO REPLY TO SUCH A RANDOM REQUEST AS STATED ON THAT SCREENSHOT. JUST LIKE THAT THEY SAY SURE TO SENDING $2,720 WITHOUT VERIFUCATION WHO IS ASKING FOR IT
did you read the article? they thought they knew who was asking….
The request came from a known contact- that’s unfortunately the trick. It has the known contacts number and WhatsApp picture.
The message looks like it’s from there friend
#ANOTHER SOLUTION
WHO NEEDS A SMART PHONE ANYWAY
Who needs yiddish tanya shiurim on the radio? Who needs this website? Go to new square and not have any of this, right?
WHO NEEDS COL ANYWAYS?
why don’t u just block the person?
There a texting you from the hacked WhatsApp of a friend of yours
No take care of him for once and for all and he will never be able to scam you again. And be careful.
Someone hacked into your friends account and then asks you for a favor posing as your friend…
Went straight to my settings and turned on two-step verification.
Scammers aside, getting locked out of your own account by hackers sounds like a nightmare! I had that happen with my Facebook account and there’s nothing that can be done about it, they changed the password and contact email address so I had to write off the whole account.
United States postal service never asks for any money to redeliver a missing parcel
The latest scam ! We the usps will redeliver your missed delivery ,just fill in your credit card info for $3.00 credit card number expiration number and security number , what a fool would do this
The reason such a hack is possible is because Whatapp can now be implemented on more then one phone with the same account/number
I’d like to become this guy’s friend. He send $2k+ just like that…
One more solution:
Don’t give out codes send to your messages from whatsapp…
