A Jewish Star announced Thursday 10 semifinalists in the singing competition that has captured the imagination of thousands around the world.
Over 50 auditions came in to the contest presented by COLlive.com and Soul II Soul, an organization for the education of children with special needs.
26 contestants were presented online for viewing and voting over the past months, creating much buzz within the Jewish music industry.
“I think it’s amazing that you are giving young people a chance to connect to Torah and Jewish music,” said legendary composer and singer Yossi Green.
By Sunday, January 24, 2010 – the date ending the initial audition period – some 61,893 votes were counted on contestants that hailed from Brooklyn, Azerbaijan, California, France and more.
A Jewish Star judges Avraham Fried, Mendy Pellin and Michael Sojcher will choose three finalists from your top ten.
The three finalists will perform at the Soul II Soul concert on March 7, 2010 in Brooklyn, NY.
The contestants are listed in order of amount of votes, starting from ten up to number one who received the highest votes.

It’s what makes people keep there interest in a singer. This competition is to find new stars, the new hit. A hit cant just have a good vioce! He has to be unique in someway, entertaining! Going purely by voice, Shmuli Steifel has the most vibrant, exciting and resonating voice. Seriously. He sounds like a pro. Not just an average guy singing a song partially on key. I want to show his video to my Baalei Batim, I’m sure they’ll go wild over him, and we’ll bring him down for the Yomim Noraim, or just for an enjoyable concert.

I listened to quite a nice amount of voices over and over again and I came to the conclusion that 1)Shmuli Stiefel definately has the most real voice! We’re talking about natural sound, power, keys most people can’t hit, keeping a tune in an EXTEREMLY difficult song (kol hakavod in challenging yourself to such a song, you did great), I can also see some good stage skills involved overthere (handmotions, smiling, etc. all very important for a concert), P.S. On the Jewish Star website it states as follows: “and the top vote-getters will then be reviewed by the contest judges, who will choose three finalists.”
I understand that to mean; Regardless of what the votes are, the JUDGES will choose a contestant! Basically, there is no connection between who the JUDGES choose and how many votes a contestant got. Case in point, where is the vote tally? Contestants were encouraged to make recordings and video’s but no mention or encouragement to “get votes.’
The Finalist have NOTHING to do with the voting they were all picked by the JUDGES!

Without doubt, Moshe Lehr is the most entertaining, and has a real sweet voice-for all those of you complaining about fancy music videos to hide true voice, Moshe didnt do that! Number 2 Shuky Sadon has the nicest voice!!! And thats it!
BSB has a really really amazing voive! He just doesnt show it here….not sure what he was trying to do in this video!!!! But if you heard his voice outside this competition, it really is one of the nicest voices I’ve heard!!

I agree. People are missing that this was determined by popular vote. No bearing necessarily on who is better than who. Whether or not you agree with how Jewish Star chose to determine the top 10, they were very clear that it would be based ONLY on votes for the top 10. So who you think is best – or even who the JUDGES think is best, is irrelevent because they are going purely by numbers here, which is exactly what they said they would do for this stage from the start.

ohayon deserves it. he really has it all. rimler should have been there too- great powerful hartzig voice. yukdoff has the pure voice.

true, i forgot that they were being voted- but even so, as good as most of the other singers were, people usually go for the “out there” one- which was HIS the rest were good, im not bashing them, but usually the weirder ones get the most attention. good luck to them all!

I agree with you. In my opinion avremel blesofsky is 2nd after grunblatt but this goes by votes, apparently he didn’t get them. To 57 there is no organized “they” it’s just random voters.
“they” did not put him there because of anything – “they” merely counted the votes and informed us of the results.

How does 10/24 make sense? That’s not top ten, that’s just top half, or anyone above average. The top five in this list is a much better representation of who is outstanding.

ppl should realize that he is the only one with no fancy sound effects and no fancy footwork, what he did took guts, he is an amazing entertaining person. i know for a fact that he didnt even ask people to vote for him and he did this merely for entertainment. truth be told, he is funny and a comedian with tremendous personality, who will not just be another singer…..

Ohanyon has potential be the next jewish music super-star (like Schweckey). The others sing well, but he has star factor and something that sets him apart. I hope he wins.

Hopefully next year the contestants will ALL sing without music and NO voting till ALL contestants have been previewed! That way it will be a fair competition like American Idol!
As an expert on vocal training I can tell you some who made it in top 10 don’t sing vocally correct, while some who didn’t I can hear had professional voice training.
Boruch Sholom Blesofsky should be part of the 3 finalists- for personality, voice, character and the ability to entertain.
Shmuly Rimler is a great Chazzan more than he is a stage performer.
whoever did not make it, don’t worry, it doesn’t reflect on your voice or talent, it only reflects on popularity. This is strictly a popularity competition.
The big billy goat isn’t in the top ten but I see the younger billy goat made it for some reason 🙂

I liked Shmuly Rimler too but maybe the reason he and some others did not make it is because they didn’t get the word out to people to vote – remember, it’s a purely numbers game at this stage. Also maybe because they didn’t use everything at their disposal in their favor. The public does not always recognize the difference between a well produced voice and a naturally rich one.
