Dear COLlive,
On my way out of Yeshiva yesterday, heading home for the Pesach break, I met my principal in the hallway who handed me an envelope, and said to me “this is a small thank you for your hard work and dedication to your students”. I thanked him, wished him an enjoyable Pesach, and walked away.
Looking at the envelope, I thought it was probably a $100.00 dollar bonus, or a gift certificate to a local store for few dollars. I thought it was a nice way to show the schools appreciation.
However, when I opened the envelope, I was astounded at what I saw; a $1,000 dollar gift certificate to The Hat Box in Flatbush, A store which carries anything a man can need for his wardrobe including hats, shirts, shoes, suits, coats, and pants. It was such a generous amount that I had to double and triple check the numbers to make sure I wasn’t seeing extra zeroes.
Us Melamdim in Crown Heights are extremely thankful to the individual(s) who organized this gift, and obviously to the donors, including the Hat Box, who gave generously of their money to enable this incredible gesture.
Thank you again for your generosity, and may you all continue to be able to give with a wide and full hand for many years to come.
Sincerely,
A thankful and humbled Melamed in Crown Heights.
My guess is that Col posted this to give a thank you. Stop being so negative and say, “Oh, its so nice that that school did that.”
What a great way for the community to come together and show support for our melamdim. A huge thank you to those who pulled off this enormous project! May Hashem betnch you for your kindness!
the one who makes everything happen
not jewish schools do not get paid so well either i dont think they need to get more money
why the complaints? if you want to do something for the women then you do it, finally someone is doing good dont complain!!!
this is a great project cuz they were not party oriented..
that weeds out the bad teachers, only those really dedicatred to teaching should be teaching, and yes they definately should be paid better and on time.
If teachers would get a real fair paying, it would be thousands of more teachers only in CH to compete, many ppl would not go for shlichus, many ppl would not pursue other better paid jobs or business, if they could get good money teaching Torah
You maybe would be happier today
Kosher and Freilichin Pesach!!
To #41:
Benefits?!?!
Never heard of them!!
my teacher doesnt care bout us
Teachers in the Jewish world r so underpaid, and given so few benefits its such a shame.
to all the teachers who are making an effort to give their most and their best, I give brocha for such as this.
While I am very grateful for this bonus, wouldn’t it be better if we were paid at a rate that we could live like a mentsch without having to worry about such “luxuries” like a new hat, etc.
Are we not as important as the electrician or the plumber who makes a decent enough salary to pay his bills without having to expect handouts from this generous individual or that fine organization who steps in to help.
Once again, this in no way diminishes the gratitude we feel for those who do help, but…….
How Beautiful!
really nice to see this, great 🙂
Maybe someone could start something like this in Toronto,
even just to help make sure the Melamdim get their paychecks,
at least b4 Pesach
its about time someone does something for the teachers.
i hope this starts a trend…
thank you!!!!!!!! rabbi s goldstein and yudale gurwitz u did it..
Y.G is Yudele Gurwitz S.G is Rabbi Sholom Goldstein
yasher koach yudele gurwitz and rabbi sholom goldstein for putting it together, it is so appreciated….
such a huge project only Yehuda Gurwitz could pull off..
amazing job!!!!!!!
My husband made sure that our kids will have nice, new yom tov clothing, he made sure I bought myself something new. But as for himself, he didn’t get himself anything.
Thank you from the bottom of my heart for giving him such a beautiful gift, something he will really use for himself which he wouldn’t have done otherwise.
Thank you,
a teachers wife
This is so amazing and so needed! Thank you donors for giving. Since it is done so nicely and given as a gift it really makes it easy to accept it and use it! I am so happy that this is finally being done in our community who so desperately needs it.
Hope that many many many more people will give next year that the woman teachers can receive this as well!
Kosher and Freilichen Pesach. May all those that participated in this great mitzvah be bentched with much good, parnassa, nachas and simchas!!
oh my gash!!!
Wow that is truly special!! Its really nice to see so many people appreciating teachers and giving beautiful gifts of tzedakah before Pesach! I was so touched when my husband came home with it! (It would also be very touching if some of us woman teachers also got appreciated for all our hard work.) But Im really glad my husband is appreciated. B’h for that!! He works really hard!! Teacher from the west coast
Thanks a lot to whoever sponsored this generous gift. I can’t usually buy any clothing,, But this will be a great help. Thanks again! May Hashem “bentch” all the Yidden this Pesach to feel TRUE freedom!
wow Yudele gurwitz!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
who is Y.g and S.g?
Some schools just can’t afford it
we finished the same day as L’mudei Kodesh ,( i still don’t get that) we rushed from our cooking and cleaning to put in our hours and did so without compromise, So why can’t those in charge of our paychecks do the same?? come on its Erev
Pesach we can really use the $$$
We teachers would be thrilled just to get the paychecks we r owed, and a thank you or two couldn’t hurt
what is with chanoch lenaar?
I’m sure they went to the store that gave them the best deal!!
Really really nice!
what about the women teachers? Don’t they work just as hard as the men in this community, and don’t they deserve some generosity as a thank you token?
this is an amazing article. My brother is a melamed here in CH, and works his u know what off eacha nd every day for your kids!!!! he puts his heart out on the classroom desk each and every morning!!!!!!!!!!!!!
this article : like!
Did anyone think of honoring the women who teach your daughters? Some of us are the bread winners for the family and we put our soul into them.
so nice, cuz most father don’t get to buy themselves things for yom tov so its nice to see that this is dedicated to them
I want to thank all those who worked very hard to do this especially Y.G and S.G. and of course all those that helped make this possible by contributed towards it…
The “outside CH” store (The Hat Box) generously participated in the gift certificate, while local stores did NOT! Maybe local stores should sponsor such certificates! The teachers work for our community, the local stores customer base is from the community – it makes sense that they give back a little to the community!
But how about us female teachers?
we also received a nice bonus for pesach! thank you rabbi korf and rabbi katz!
“Us Melamdim ” should be “We Melamdim”.
maybe the crown heights stores should sponsor!!!
that is so nice more then the gift certificate the words he used when he handed it to you…………..thank you and the bonus make you go back to work so appreciated that you work even harder to make diamonds out of your students
We need to learn from the Williamsburg community where they support each other.
Probably because the Hat Box gave a deal no Crown Heights store would have given, but that’s just a guess.
This is accepted in all crowds – besides Chabad- Wow yemos hamoshiach – chabad is finally appreciating their educators – maybe this will be the begining of the end of the chinuch crisis in our midst
kudos to all those who worked hard in organizing this beautiful project. but why not give a gift certificate to our crown heights shops. keep the money local???
especially since in our Cheder we are 2 months behind in pay probably not getting our paychecks b4 pesach
I was also very touched… you see my husband as NOT going to buy anything for himself for yom tov…THANK YOU AGAIN
When you’re working hard and underpaid… its good to see that someone appreciates what you do.
