A large Menorah was lit Sunday to mark the first night of Chanukah in the heart of the German capital, at the Brandenburg Gate, Berlin’s most famous landmark and in which the Nazis once marched.
The ceremony was conducted by Rabbi Yehuda Teichtal, Shliach and Rabbi of the Berlin Jewish community, and Shliach Rabbi Shmuel Segal.
The Menorah was lit by Holocaust survivor Margot Friedlander, who survived Auschwitz concentration camp. With her late husband, she moved to New York City after the war, where she lived for 64 years.
In 2010, she returned to Berlin. At the age of 98, Friedlander visits schools and other institutions on a regular basis, in order to talk about her life.
Friedlander was honored with the lighting of the Menorah together with 9-year-old Jewish child Noah Aberschanskij.
Also joining were Josef Schuster, the President of the Central Council of Jews in Germany, the US ambassador to Germany Richard Grenell, the Israeli Ambassador to Germany Jeremy Issacharoff, and other dignitaries.
