Internationally acclaimed British comedian Ashley Blaker is offering a little entertainment for people who are stuck at home due to social distancing and quarantine by uploading Strictly Unorthodox, his first Off-Broadway show, for people to watch for free online.
He is the first Orthodox Jewish comedian to be given his own BBC show – ‘Ashley Blaker’s Goyish Guide To Judaism’ – which returned in October 2019 to rave reviews.
The show ran originally at The Jerry Orbach Theater in New York and received rave reviews from both Jewish and secular press. The New York Times called it ‘a slickly funny stand-up show’ and said that Blaker was ‘proof that even the most reverent enjoy a little irreverence’. Meanwhile, the New York Post described Blaker as like ‘John Oliver in a yarmulke’.
The Jewish Press was equally impressed calling the show ‘hilarious, delivered with Seinfeld-like precision timing’. The Five Towns Jewish Times called the show ‘extraordinary’ and said that ‘Blaker raises the bar in kosher entertainment’.
A full video of a later performance, filmed at Stand Up New York on the Upper West Side had been available to purchase or rent online. However, in light of current events, Blaker has uploaded the full show to YouTube.
“I am sure many are in self-isolation and would fancy having something to watch,” Blaker said. “I hope people can enjoy this in good health and that this might lighten the mood in these dark times.”
