The 71st Precinct in Crown Heights said an official farewell to its long-serving Detective Vinny Martinos on Thursday who led community affairs for 28 years.
Martinos, a known fixture in the neighborhood, served his 28-year career at the precinct in central Brooklyn which covers the southern portion of Crown Heights, Wingate, and Prospect Lefferts Gardens.
Martinos’ fellow officers were joined by his family and Crown Heights community members who gathered for the traditional “Walkout” farewell, cheering the well-loved officer who was devoted to the community and provided decades of dedicated service.
“The NYPD is my family,” Martinos said in his remarks, and thanked current and former Commanding Officers of the 71 Precinct, as “by far the best anywhere in the City.”
“28 years of coming here, I met so many good people, so many people who are still my friends, and will always be my friends,” he said. “I had some great community partners here.”

Martinos addressed the crowd and then departed in an awaiting classic car.
On Tuesday, a farewell salute event at the Jewish Children’s Museum hosted by Devorah Halberstam and COLlive.com was attended by the top brass of the New York Police Department, elected officials and community leaders of Crown Heights.

Watching this brought tears to my eye. VInny was not just a cop; he was a friend who truly cared about our entire community.
Vinny was the cream of the crop, always ready to help the community.. we are losing the best of the best in the 71st pct.
it is the evil dangerous policies of out liberal mayor and governor, that are chasing good cops out, leaving them no choice but to retire.
crime, murder exploding thru the roof, quality of life down the sewer…
all the good work Giuliani built is set back by 10 years…
