Digging wells - pshat

Humans need water to survive. In the times of the Patriarchs, one got water from lakes, rivers, or wells. So w/o lakes and rivers nearby, one needs wells. It used to be that a feudal king, e.g. Avimelech, would control the wells. Not only did wells allow a person to live and have water for his family and animals, wells represented money (selling water rights) and power.
