Beginning in 2024, the European Union will require visitors to get pre-approval via the European Travel Information and Authorisation System, ending the days of spontaneous holidays overseas.
Before securing tickets, lodging, or a reservation at that trendy hotspot you saw on TikTok, vacationers will need to submit an ETIAS application for approximately $8.
Applicants will need to provide travel documentation, such as a passport, as well as personal information, education level, current occupation, anticipated trip details, and any criminal convictions.
While most applications are processed within minutes, some take longer to yield a decision and the European Union advises visitors to apply “well in advance.”
A response is promised within four days but could be extended by 14 to 30 days depending on the circumstance.
Once the authorization is secured, however, it is valid for up to three years or until the visitor’s passport expires.
“With a valid ETIAS travel authorization, you can enter the territory of these European countries as often as you want for short-term stays — normally for up to 90 days in any 180-day period,” the EU’s website reads.
“However, it does not guarantee entry. When you arrive, a border guard will ask to see your passport and other documents and verify that you meet the entry conditions.”
The travel authorization is only necessary to enter 30 European countries, including Spain, Germany, France, and Greece.
While the requirement was announced as going into effect in January 2024, experts doubt it will actually be implemented then, having already hit multiple delays.
Maybe now USA government will come to their senses and remove the ESTA requirement for Europeans entering USA and maybe EU will drop their visa demands.
This isn’t ending spontaneous travel.
As if people just Uber to the airport and buy a ticket at the counter.
People will have to spend 5 more minutes after booking their flight.

It’s because, Biden is letting in America. Everyone. From every country, American citizenship doesn’t mean anything, anymore.
It’s like a third world country.
The Europeans is smarter then Biden.
what a surprise.
What does Biden has to do with this?
What is your background originally????
It’s not a visa but a pre-approval. It’s the same what the US requires EU citizens for many years except the US charges more. Not a big deal.
How would it work going to G.B-Great Britain, or U.K. England, Ireland, Scotland, and Wales, since G.B. or U.K. are not part of the EU.
It’s an electronic pre-authorization to enter the EU that is valid up to 2 years and costs EUR 7. The US has had the same for many years already (ESTA), including for EU nationals costing a fee too and since more recently Canada (eTA – US citizens/residents exempt). All these headlines that US citizens will need a visa for the EU are a little too dramatic.
Such a chutzpa!
Europe is having problems surviving , with money issues and crime. Trying to kill their tourism is a dumb move
Now they will feel how it is to present your whole live wealth just to get a piece of paper to travel.
That’s okay
Americans are going to spend their money locally or in the other countries my be they discover how Europe is expensive
I don’t like this at all i love the fact that us citizens can travel to so many countries without visa now they want to tell us we need visas please i wish this was plan was canceled
You Americans, are very spoiled.
It’s about time Europeans did such a thing.
What when “us” Europeans come to the US?
No Visa’s?
Yes! We get Visa’s to come to the US too.
Are we complaining?
And this is without any explanation.
The Israelis need visas to come to the US too.
And …….. And the same Europe, Europeans need visas to get to places like Russia too……
Come on people, let’s get real.
It’s a small thing, and is no big deal.
Are they complaining?
Think about it.
And this is one of the many consequences.
Europeans always needed a visa to get into the US so now they made it the other way around too
The only country our family wishes to travel to is Israel Let the other countries support their own economies…
