Statement by Rabbi Shea Hecht, chairman of the board of the National Committee for the Furtherance of Jewish Education (NCFJE):
Even though the minhag of kapparos is now scrupulously observed by virtually every household in Crown Heights, few know of the Rebbe’s keen interest and unyielding support of kapparos beginning decades ago.
My father, Rabbi Jacob J. Hecht OBM, began facilitating the observance of kapparos in Crown Heights in the 1970s. In the years to come, the Rebbe would show incredible interest in every detail of kapparos, including the costs of operations, the number of birds sold, and who came to schlog kapparos.
Needless to say, the Rebbe strongly encouraged both my father and the NCFJE to grow and publicize kapparos as much as possible.
In light of this, I and the staff of NCFJE would like to take this moment to express our deepest gratitude to Hashem for giving us the tremendous zechus of fulfilling the Rebbe’s wishes for well over 30 years, and helping more than 6000 Crown Heights residents to fulfill the ancient and holy minhag of kapparos.
Of course, we express our humble appreciation to the 3 charitable men who made kapparos affordable to the entire community, Moshe Uri ben Malka, Yosef Yitzchok Halevi ben Miriam and Shmuel Chaim Dovid ben Chaya Sarah. May they be blessed with abundant spiritual and material goodness always.
We would also like to thank the editors of COLlive.com for being the sole venue that publicized the subsidized prices for the community.
At this time, NCFJE would like to make a heartfelt appeal for sponsors for kapparos of Erev Yom Kippur.
Our intention is that the cost of Erev Yom Kippur kapparos should be less than $10. I encourage those who are able to do so, to give this special gift to the people of Crown Heights and to the Rebbe at this auspicious time.

GO NAMDAR’S!!!!!!!!! WOHOOO
We see in many of the photos that the family has placed the chicken in a box instead of holding it by the wings. In my opinion this is the kindest method which does not distress the chicken, and also avoids the problem of the chicken going poop at the moment of kapporot which can ruin one of those lovely, expensive sheitels that the ladies are wearing.
Also, do not let your children pet and kiss the chicken! Latex gloves should be worn.
whose tht boy in the 5th to last picture holding a chicken he looks so familiar?
thy should say thank you to thos chicken
dont be so pessemitic!!! its a cute pic!
go musha and liba sheva great class mates of mine
go manny! love your face!
I think it’s important to know that the Shochtim DO NOT GET PAID. $0000
It is therefore important to give the Shocat a TIP. The work hard, under terrible conditions, long hours at night in all kind of weather. They don’t even have water to wash there hand and.or take a drink of water.
i spy the kohns!!
Rabbanim like Rashba, Tur, Bet Yossef called it idolatry and said it came from a ritual called “garden of Adonis”.
Rama says the origins are problematic but it has become the minhag…
Sefardim tahor rabbanim said it was minhag ha emori hence you give money instead.
Ramban says it is alike to a korban hatat hence assur, Mishna Brura disagrees.
most popular girl ever i love you!!!! mazel tov on your engagement!!
cute picture!
This isnt abut PETA or lunatic fringe groups we dislike. This is about those of us that do kaparis and are disgusted by the games, jokes, mistreatment of the chickens..
Its expensive because its a business…
I request you re-read the bnei adam.. read the english translation… ask yourself why we do kaparos and if its something to joke about ?
I totally agree!
Go chaiky!!!!!!
Go leba raksin!!!!!!!!

Love you friends
Dalya shimi and mumu u rock. We love u. Obviously everyone else does too since there are so many pix of u.
sarah musias so cute!! mis u guys!!
very unsafe.. the chicken should not be that close to the child’s mouth. it has diseases!!
Awesome job with the photos!!
If the rebbe wanted it to grow etc. Then no one should say to do it with money instead of chickens,
Besides who are to be more merciful then g-d? He is the most merciful, and if he says to shlug kaporres you can’t b more merciful and say have mercy on the chickens
Wow , you sure are brave !
From your Montreal Fans
‘well said
When you go to the farms chickens cost about 4-6 dollars and that is when you buy it one at a time why does it cost more then double when it come to crown hights?
The numbers don’t add up.
chili and fishman top guys in Lubavitch
Interesting point. I never thought of it that way.
I think parents taking photos is just to remember this special, once a year, event—similar to taking photos of your child with the lulav and esrog, no?
totally agree
GO NAMDARSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
goo chilli and tuli!!
I think the recent phenomenon of photographing the kapporos ceremony in an unprecedented fashion, has cheapened the minhag and has taken out the seriousness of the moment. Posing with the chickens for a photo is nonsensical.
Maybe that’s why the kapporos has attracted negative interest in the last few years.
Maybe the time has come to bring back the privacy and tznius to the ceremony.
Let the bloggers and the photographers busy themselves with documenting the shopping for food and esrogim up and down the avenue.
Hi Devorah Leah G! You are so yummy ba”h! Gmar chasima tova!
I still see someone running after a kid with the chicken, ive been doing kaparos for my whole life, but still theres no excuse to play games with a nivra elokim
