A once-in-a lifetime event – a double Hachnosas Sefer Torah, one Sefardi and one Ashkenazi – took place at the Chabad Israeli Center in Chicago, Illinois, under the leadership of Rabbi Menachem and Feige Slavaticki.
Over 400 people, mostly secular Israelis, took part in this great simcha.
After the completion of both Sifrei Torah, the procession began, led by a fire engine topped by a huge crown – Kesser Torah – with signs and pictures on all sides. Riding the fire engine were dozens of excited children.
Over 50 torches accompanied the two chuppahs and the many marchers, which included men, women and many children.
The march proceeded to the Chabad shul in Skokie which currently hosts the Chabad Israeli Minyan, where it was greeted by the Sifrei Torah, brought out to welcome the new Torahs who would make their home there.
Lively and joyous hakafos ensued, followed by a program for children and a Seudas Mitzvah.
Divrei bracha were given by Illinois Head Shliach Rabbi Daniel Moscowitz, Skokie Shliach Rabbi Yosef Posner, and by the donors.
Chabad Israeli Center was established five years ago by Rabbi Daniel Moscowitz of Lubavitch Chabad of Illinois, to serve the large Israeli population in the greater Chicago area.
