Bochurim Moshie and Zalman Levy, brothers from Crown Heights, are using NFTs to help their brother and sister-in-law raise money for their new Shlichus.
The brothers have come up with the idea to help raise funds for Rabbi Dovi and Pessi Levy, new Shluchim to South Florida, announced today on COLlive.com.
They explain the idea with three questions: What? Why? and How?
What: NFTs (non-fungible tokens) have become a thing this past year. They are pictures that are tied to a blockchain, such as Ethereum or Polygon, and are commonly sold as art. One NFT sold for 69 million dollars! Some collections have a starting price of over $200,000. One reason for their high value is the social status that comes with it. Many rich and famous people own NFTs from several collections, making owning them a social status. NFTs have been used to raise awareness and as another way for artists to sell their art. It has become a more lucrative way to sell art. It enables ownership of digital pictures.
Why:
“This new technology should be used for the good,” says Moshie. “Aside from supporting the Shliach, the NFT is a virtual sign of your support for the Shliach.”
The purpose is to target those into crypto, to give them a native way to give Tzedakah and make them feel good at the same time, he explains.
How: One needs a crypto wallet (such as MetaMask) with Ethereum (from an exchange, such as Coinbase) in it. Head to https://opensea.io/collection/
The two brothers’ hope is to draw the crypto people in the Jewish community to donate to their brother and sister-in-law’s Shlichus.
When asked if they think it will succeed, they said, “Without trying we definitely won’t know, if even one person donates because of this, it was worth it!”
