There is something in Crown Heights bothering for a long time and I don’t see anything being done about it.
As a mother with children, BH, I am aware that we live in a neighborhood of many different types of people. I know that there are sad cases out there, and I do have pity on the destitute and homeless.
I myself have a hard time saying no to a beggar sitting outside a store as I exit, and usually give some change or even a dollar.
However the fact is that lately the amount of individuals roaming our streets and our shuls seems to be getting out of hand.
And its not only the amount.
They seem to have become more aggressive than ever. Many of them are angry and hurl verbal abuse at passerby.
Lately I was told not to give money to one individual, as he was arrested for buying drugs and uses the charity money from kind individuals to feed his habit.
But none of this is as bad as what I witnessed yesterday. Two of these individuals got into a violent fight in the middle of Kingston Avenue, breaking the store front window of Crown Cosmetics.
This time, the police made an arrest, and no resident or passerby was hurt.
But what about next time?
Why do my children and I have to be exposed to violence, rudeness and dangerous substances?
