U.S. Senator JD Vance, a fire-brand Christian Republican Senator from Ohio, was announced as the running-mate of former president Donald Trump in the 2024 presidential election.
The announcement on Monday is timed with the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, where Trump is slated to be elected as the party’s nominee.
Trump announced his vice presidential pick on social media, stating:
“After lengthy deliberation and thought, and considering the tremendous talents of many others, I have decided that the person best suited to assume the position of Vice President of the United States is Senator J.D. Vance of the Great State of Ohio.
“J.D. honorably served our Country in the Marine Corps, graduated from Ohio State University in two years, Summa Cum Laude, and is a Yale Law School Graduate, where he was Editor of The Yale Law Journal, and President of the Yale Law Veterans Association.
“J.D.’s book, “Hillbilly Elegy,” became a Major Best Seller and Movie, as it championed the hardworking men and women of our Country. J.D. has had a very successful business career in Technology and Finance, and now, during the Campaign, will be strongly focused on the people he fought so brilliantly for, the American Workers and Farmers in Pennsylvania, Michigan, Wisconsin, Ohio, Minnesota, and far beyond….”
Born in Middletown, Ohio, Vance served in the Marine Corps before studying political science and philosophy at The Ohio State University and earning a Juris Doctor from Yale Law School.
He is married to Usha Chilukuri Vance, an attorney and daughter of Indian immigrants. The couple has 3 children.
Vance launched his first political campaign for Ohio’s Senate seat in 2021 and won the Republican nomination after being endorsed by Trump. He is known for his staunch support for Israel, but has criticized the vast U.S. military aid to Ukraine.
He criticized the administration of President Joe Biden for meddling in Israel’s internal affairs, against Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. After the October 7 massacre, he wrote:
“As we watch this horrible situation in Israel unfold, Americans must face a stark truth: our tax dollars funded this.
“Money is fungible, and many of the dollars we sent to Iran are being used to now kill innocent people.
“This must stop.
“Israel has every right to defend itself. I wish our friends well, but most of all I wish they weren’t fighting against weapons bought with our money.”
Just like Trump’s former vice president Mike Pence, Vance is a Christian believer and is likely to help secure the faithful vote in the election.
If elected, Vance would be the second youngest vice president. The youngest was John Cabell Breckinridge who served under
James Buchanan from 1821 to 1875). He was 36 when he took office.
Another notable youngster was Richard Nixon, who was 40 when he began serving as the 36th Vice President of the United States under Ike Eisenhower.

I’m perplexed by the tone of most of the comments here that are seemingly hostile to Trump. Although I think Trump may have had better options from the standpoint of potential vice presidential picks and their positions on Israel.
